This has been the worst experience I have ever had with a company in the 37 years (and 8 properties I own). The most important thing I can pass on to anyone from this horrible experience, is to make sure you do most of your dealing with them via email and not on phone conversations or text, because they do no stand behind what was said or texted. In my original conversation with Jackie Farris, the office manager at Second Generation Roofing, I had advised her that the Property Management and HOA at my son's complex required that all the roofs be some sort of charcoal gray color. She sent me a pic of a charcoal GAF roof sample in an email. I responded by phone asking for a lighter gray as the 2 story peak roof home was already very hot upstairs much of the time. She responded in an email: From: Subject: RE: Roof Shingle Sample Color & Gutter Screens Date: September 16, 2021 at 1:44:16 PM PDT To: "'Kim Sousa'" Hello, Here are the colors for the gutters, and also a picture of the lighter gray you were asking for ( there are 3 different grays Thunderstorm Gray, George Town Grey and Moiré Black). Hope that helps. Thank you, Jackie Farris Office Manager Second Generation Roofing, Inc. (707) 765-8512 I responded again by phone with Jackie letting her know I liked the lightest one, "Georgetown Gray." Next email: On Sep 29, 2021, at 9:28 AM, Kim Sousa wrote: Hi Jackie, I can’t find the pics anywhere of the roof I picked. Next email to Jackie: From: Kim Sousa [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, September 29, 2021 9:38 AM To: Second Generation Roofing Subject: Re: Second Generation Roofing - Updated Bid Proposal & Contract - 8290 Windmill Farms Dr. Cotati_21-269 I found it - Georgetown Grey 50 yr. shingles and Deg. white covered gutters. On Tuesday 10/05/21 I met with Noel (Second Generation appraiser), and paid him $10,275 in cash for the roof, gutters, and permit. I stated to him that the roof looked "dark." When I got home that evening I went over the pictures my son had sent me of the shingle packaging and found it was not "Georgetown Gray" shingles but a completely different brand (GAF) in Charcoal (GAF's darkest roof they make). This is totally opposite of what I had repeatedly discussed over text, phone and email with both Jackie and Noel, that I wanted the lightest gray roof, not black. They denied any error on their part since the contract stated "charcoal" under roof color. I was not concerned about the word, as Jackie and I had discussed choosing a the lighter gray color, and often were refer to the gray colors as charcoal shades as well. My email confirmed I had chosen the lightest Georgetown Gray in some other brand she email me, and they put on the blackest roof from GAF in charcoal. I am sickened by all of this. It was expensive, and they made an error they are not standing behind. My son's home will now be hot for years to come, and they could care less. I would never use this company. I will be filing a formal complaint with the BBB and the contractor licensing board, as well as leaving as many negative reviews as possible.

Couldn't have been better. The crew arrived at the time we were told on both days and were working at once. All workers were cordial and friendly.

Steve's crew was outstanding. They got the job done in just over two days, including a complete re-roof, new gutters, and two new sun tunnels. They repaired dead wood as needed, vented where necessary, repaired chimney casing, manufactured gutters on site (in green to match the roof!), installed them, incl metal grated guards, and it all looks quite fine.. They were always on time, professional and courteous. They did everything they said they were going to do, cleaned up beautifully, installed sun tunnels they told me I would love -- and they were right. They outbid three other local roofers and honored the Angie's list discount.

They were overall excellent. The estimate was the same price we were charged when the job was completed. We got 3 bids and Dale came in the lowest. We waited over 1 month to make our decision and Dale still honored the original estimate.
My only complaint would be that Dale did not honor our Angies List coupon. He instead said he would knock of $300 if we started work immediately, which was $200 less that the value of the coupon. AND then, when he did not subtract that amount from the contract he stated that he would instead pay for and obtain our permit from the city. This saved us over $200, but still less than what we would have saved had he honored the coupon OR knocked off $300.
That said, the crew was great. They were prompt and very clean, which to me are very important. Anybody can put on a roof, but how the crew treats your property and whether or not they arrive on time is a big deal.
There was one small issue which was very visible. When Dale came out for the final walk thru, I pointed out the problem and he had his lead guy back on site within 2 hours to fix the problem.
Overall, I would highly recommend Second Generation. The quality of work trumped the the fact that the coupon was not honored...just be aware of this going in to the job.

They did not charge me 1 cent for coming out. They asked me why I wanted a new roof because the roof was fine. "Angie's List provides us with names of great Service Providers, when a roofing company turns their back on an $8,000 job, because the job was unecessary. I believe Angie's List has found a jewel."

I called four roofers for estimates. Two responded right away, one never did and one called three weeks later. Stephen from Second Generation called back within an hour or so and did the estimate the next day. I got it in an email a day later. His was the lowest bid, not by a lot but still the lowest. I had a leak problem and he was the only one who told me what caused it. That, along with his responsiveness, gave me confidence in his companies ability. I had a couple of follow-up questions and when I called him he either answereed immediately or called back within an hour or so. When I told him I wanted him to do the work he came out with color samples and a contract the next day. His crew showed up promptly on the day the job was scheduled. They finished in a day and a half and left my property cleaner than when they started on both days. I got what I wanted, when I wanted it and for what I was planning to pay. The roof looks great. They even threw in a couple of small extras. You can't ask for more than that.

They worked with all the tenants as to the best times, even did some weekend work. Provided me with a fair price. It was an owner's hands-on project which i appreciated.

Originally, they suggested a much less costly fix which, unfortunately, did not work -- not their fault, just not the right part of the roof. So, subsequently they reroofed the house, discounting by the cost of the previous fix. Their price was good; they came when they said they'd come and cleaned up after themselves.

I had a very serious roofing issue -- massive leaks, extensive dry rot. Second Generation Roofing came in with a good estimate and prompt execution of the job. They really did first rate work, and they did it fast.

They do an excellent job. The guy came here for estimating the job and then he supervised the job. The work is guaranteed for 40 years. Their estimate was very comparative. The response is very good.

Excellent, could not recommend working with them more.We got 4 bids, exact same job, tear off, install new comp shingles, new gutters, coordinate with solar people.
For roof:Second generation's bid was 9500.Other bids were 13K, 14K, and 20K. For the same job.
For gutters, the other companies bid us 3000-3870, which seemed high, so we called reputable gutter company who gave us bid of 1800. Owner of second generation didn't blink, said, no problem, we are happy to coordinate with them.
They completed job in 2 days. During the day they were cleaning up after themselves, running magnets all around to get nails. At end of each day, they cleaned completely up. At end of job, our yard was cleaner than when they started.
The roof looks fantastic, they painted all the flashing and tacked it down nicely. We found one spot where they had missed flashing, and owner immediately offered to send someone out to paint it within next 2 days. We asked if he could do some other painting (just a couple things) while he was up there on part of the roof that they had not worked on. We offered to pay. Owner said, no, please don't worry about it. It will just take a second, we will take care of it.
Watching crew while they worked it is really clear that they know what they are doing, do it very very well, and have worked together for a while, which gives us a lot of confidence in the final job.
Overall, we can't recommend them enough. Owner is honest, gave us a great bid, and was really great to work with. He coordinated with the gutter and solar people really well and everything went smoothly.

They were quick to get it started, having had abatement on the roof done in 1 day and then had the roof done a little over a day. Flashings were replaced as well.

After failing to keep the initial appointment (with no notice until well after the agreed upon time) he came out, told me the roof only had maybe 5 years left on it, slapped caulking on a bunch of cracked tiles, supposedly checked & caulked flashings.
I've since learned a lot more about tile roofs, enough to know that this guy did me no favors. You don't caulk tiles, you replace them, and that this type of tile roof lasts indefinitely as long as you replace tiles & fix the flashings. After being alerted to a leaky spot in the flashing while replacing a window I now have to pay for tile replacement & flashing work that the initial inspection was supposed to have addressed.

Response from Second Generation Roofing Inc
"I appreciate this homeowner’s input. Every once in a while an employee comes along and completely miss-represents himself to us and the homeowner. These employees never last long and I will guarantee whoever informed the homeowner that a tile roof needs replacing no longer works with us. It is not in our practice to use caulking on any cracked tiles. I am very sorry for the incident and I ensure you that I will do my best to not let this happen again. Thank you. Dale Daniels.
