Things started pleasantly enough. The crew showed up on time the first day and we showed them in detail exactly what we needed done. They took a list of the parts they would need and did a fair amount of the initial wiring work on the first day. We started to worry as the day wore on, however, because the "helper" did not seem to have much experience and spent an extraordinary amount of time (i.e., several hours) trying to fish a stretch of wire from our attic into the wall space. From the conversations the electrician was having with the helper, it became more and more clear that the helper really did not know what he was doing. Things took a decidedly awkward turn when "Kirk" showed up in the middle of the day, barged right into our home without so much as knocking on the door or introducing himself to us, barked out a few orders to his electrician and his helper, and just as abruptly walked out and left, never pausing for even a moment to say hello, introduce himself or ask about the job. But they eventually got the wiring done and scheduled a return visit for two days later. When they arrived (a bit late) on that day, we realized about mid-day that they were not installing the switches we'd ordered. The electrician tried to explain that they "forgot" to get the correct switches, so they were installing these as "temp" switches and would have to come back another day to replace the "temp" switches with the switches we'd ordered in the first place. I told them we were disappointed that, what had been described as a fairly simple job, was now going to bleed over into a third day, and I asked them not to bill me for the extra time caused by their forgetting the parts. The electrician told me not to worry, that when they came back they would only need an hour or two to replace the switched. When they showed up on the third day (a few days later), instead of a couple of hours, they stayed for essentially the whole day, moving very very slowly. I suspected that they were padding their time as they probably did not have any other jobs booked that day. When I got the bill, boy was I floored! "Kirk" had charged us, in full, for all of the time they spent (including the time they spent installing the "wrong" switches and the time later spent on installing the "right" switches). But it gets worse. Kirk billed me for the time the crew spent in the office "preparing" to come to my house (about a mile and maybe 3 minutes away), plus "travel time", plus "phantom time" that Kirk explained was a function of his office software "rounding up", plus a fuel surcharge that he never disclosed. He also marked up the cost of the switches more than 200% above what I was able to buy them for at a local electrical supply store. The work was satisfactory and we finally settled the bill, but what an ordeal! I looked them up on the BBB website and found 5 complaints were filed within a 36 month period. So I am apparently not alone.
