We recently purchased a home on a steep hillside that needed stabilization.  After receiving 3 quotes we went with Chuck thinking that he had the most experience.  In the end, the project was not finished to our satisfaction and it took 30 days to complete even though the contract read that it would only take about a week.  Chuck would say that his crew were going to show up and they wouldn't because he "couldn't find a driver."  We went away on vacation and the project was supposed to be nearly complete only to find that they hadn't even been to our house the entire time we were gone.  The contract promised 3 to 4 terraces and he only installed 2.  (He ran out of ties he said.) The contract indicated that he would install the irrigation and run the water line from the inside of the house.  Instead, he ran it off of a faucet on the outside and installed pipe that is not meant to be exposed to the sun along our concrete walkway (it looks terrible and unprofessional, to say the very least).  We were supposed to receive a timer on the wall for the sprinklers per the contract and he did not install it- we have to water by hand.  (Yet, he would not knock off a penny of the price.)  He charged us for galvanized pipe and there is no galvanized pipe.  He planted sun loving plants on our shady hillside and they all died.  He also planted where the irrigation did not reach and they died as well.  None of the groundcover has grown since it was planted.  We asked if he could throw in some tree trimming and he butchered our oak trees and charged us an additional $750 and never cleared the cost with us. (His "tree climbers" also left the branches everywhere on the ground and along the side of our road much to our embarrassment as we pulled in to our house that evening and the neighbors were staring. TO his credit, he picked them up the next day after I called him.)  The day I paid him a couple of the sprinklers were not working and he said he'd be back the next day and he never showed up again. I alerted him of the dead plants and reminded him that he owed us sprinkler heads that never worked and still, no show.  We ended up hiring someone else to replant the entire hillside and fix the irrigation.  In the end, the project cost us nearly $15,000 and the hillside is very small.  Chuck and his crew are nice but we felt that we did not get what we paid for.  He did indicate that he "threw in" 5 extra rail ties and some plants, but in the end, it was not $11,500 of work and because we had to re-do nearly everything we are pretty disappointed.
