I really like working with Rob Laun. He's courteous, professional and a great communicator. He keeps you informed every step of the way, and will take the time to explain and answer any questions you might have. He understands old houses. Great guy, great job.
We've used him several times: to research and fix a stubborn leak in our ceiling. Put in new doors and windows. Remodel a kitchen and bath. All of our projects went well. I will use him again.

It was worth every penny of it. It was challenging because the whole thing had to be supported while they were replacing a critical support beam that was rotted out. They also revised the water drainage pattern so that it wouldn't happen again. They did a competent job with something that required more than a handy man skill.

Overall, the job came out nice and I was very satisfied with the quality of the work. However, there were significant hiccups along the way that stretched the job out for far longer than it should have taken, and made for some uncomfortable interactions with Robert. To be fair, much of the blame for the problems rest with Ganahl, from whom we purchased the windows. Here is what transpired. We ordered windows through Ganahl, and coordinated the order with Robert. In fact, Robert did a very smart thing, which was to get the guy from Ganahl to walk the job at my home prior to putting in the order, to prevent any mis-understandings. It was awfully prescient of Robert, because it was obvious that the Ganalhl rep didn't understand what we wanted, even though it was explained clearly on multiple occasions. Anyhow, the windows were ordered. When they arrived Robert went to Ganahl and picked them up. Several days later, when Robert went to install the third of the three windows, he discovered that the sill horn on the window had cracked. He thinks it was because the Ganahl folks levered the window box into his truck, and the sill horn extension couldn't bear the weight and cracked. Regardless, this was a huge inconvenience because we then had to wait with a big boarded-up hole in our house while a new sill was manufactured and shipped to Ganahl. When the window was finally installed, the inspector came and informed us that neither of the two windows installed in one of the bedrooms met the egress requirement. I was floored by this. Both Ganahl and Robert should know by heart what the egress requirements are. How they could have overlooked such a basic thing is disappointing. Fortunately, it was possible to fix this - but barely - by changing the hinges on one of the windows. When the inspector came the second time, we passed inspection. However, because it was unclear whether or not we would pass the second inspection (and it would have really turned into a nightmare if we hadn't), I withheld the second payment from Robert until the inspection was completed. Robert was quite unhappy about this and let me know in no uncertain terms. My feeling was, you get the second payment when the job is finished, and the job isn't finished until it passes inspection, because otherwise I would have no leverage left. In the end it all worked out OK, but I was disappointed in both Robert and Ganahl that they overlooked something as basic as egress requirement, and in Robert's somewhat confrontational attitude when I withheld the second payment.
Note added: Robert's response is bogus. He made the measurements and was involved with the ordering process, and in fact walked the job with the Ganahl salesperson (at Robert's request) to confirm everything was OK before the order was placed. A window contractor should know egress requirements, no ifs, ands, or buts. He has to share responsibility for the screw-up. And in the end he did get paid in full.

Response from RJ Laun Construction
"My customer ordered and payed for the windows directly from Ganahl Lumber. The salesperson was responsible for ordering windows that that met the egress requirements. I was withheld payment for a mistake that was not my responsibility."

As the designer for an extensive remodel for a hillside home in
Silverlake, I worked with Robert Laun and his company for a period of
just a few months. I found him to be very knowledgeable in all areas of
construction (we laid new footings, placed beams and shear walls, added
sliding accordion doors, matched wood flooring, full hvac, new plumbing
and elec., etc.) He was timely and always very professional. He also
was amicable to suggestions on ways to lower cost or increase the speed
of the project (this project in particular was on a very short
timeline.) The project seems to have come off without a hitch and looks
great. I'd recommend him in the future. If you have any questions,
feel free to contact me at chris @ warrenoffice.com.

Rob is a pro and a real craftsman. 1950's traditional house that needed someone capable of dealing with old moldings and non-sqaure frames. Work took 3 days and turned out great! Highly recommend!

Robert and David installed five, interior doors for us. We had ordered the doors pre-hung, but there was an issue with the hardwood floors and Robert had to adjust each of them to fit properly. After removing them from the jambs and cutting them down, he had to re-hang and re-balance them. He is a skilled carpenter and a general contractor, so this proved to be more of an inconvenience then an actual problem. Our new doors fit perfectly and function very well. His high level of craftsmanship has made a huge difference in the quality and everyday livability of our home.
He also removed the crown moulding in the living room and the two bedrooms and did so without damaging our plaster walls. Once removed he patched and prepped the underside with orange peel. He also replaced the trim around the windows and doors to one more period appropriate for our home and to match one another. His slow, deliberate pace got the job done in only a few days. Each day he left the site clean and we were able to stay in our home during the job.
Having worked in construction for 20+ years, Robert is professional, respectful, and patient. He answered all of our questions and had we found him sooner, we would have used him on earlier jobs. Despite our project not being the most glamorous, Robert seemed to consider it a privilege that we would ask him to do the work. He and his workman, David, exceeded our expectations on all accounts. We are planning to hire them again.
I did not find RJ Laun Construction through Angieslist, but instead, they were recommended to me by Joseph Fisher at Ganahl Lumber in Pasadena, from whom we purchased our new doors. Joseph and Ganahl were excellent in their own right. I can not say enough good things about them as well.

Rob hung our La Cantina 20 foot door (6 accordian and 1 everyday) when our remodel was just about done and we could not have been happier with the price nor the workmanship. When a problem was detected with the header (not his problem, mine!) he was prompt in coming back out, carefully removed and reinstalled the modlings and helped fix the problem that was related to the framing performed months earlier. Need a recommendation? You got one here.

We really like RJ Laun. We have called him back since his initial work for us. He is really straight forward. He did an excellent job and made changes as needed. He is a nice guy. He cleaned up well and was reliable. He showed up when he said he would. He seemed honest. The deck is beautiful and we love it. When we had some problems after a few years of rain the alignment of the gate was off. It wasn't shutting properly and he came back and fixed it for free.

Robert Laun is a true craftsman who cares about his profession and the quality of his work. His specialty is carpentry and he does his own work of that nature. He was always professional, punctual and he cleaned up after his work every day before he left the job. We hired him as a general contractor in addition to the remodel work and his contracted employees were as dedicated to their crafts, and as professional, as he. As for costs, he stuck to his original estimate. We did not pay one dime more than the estimate (except for extras that we added). With Robert you get what you pay for. No hidden costs or inflation after the fact. Overall, the work is very, very high quality. Not just in materials, but in the actual craftsmanship. I cannot emphasize enough the craftsmanship he puts into his work. You will get exactly what you expect and want when hiring Robert Laun. Highly recommended.
