Our chairs were sagging and we needed to bring up the seating area of the chairs to accommodate our aging bodies and knees. We looked everywhere for chairs that sat higher than 19-20 inches but to no avail. Even when originally manufactured folks told us that they could or would not bring the seating area higher. (Please, how difficult can it be when you are building or rebuilding a chair, to heighten the seat area.) So I found Pacific Design Center in Pasadena, close to home, and spoke with Al and told him of our desires. Al came to our home and brought samples of material. He poofed up the seating pillow, re-did the chairs and we are delighted. For the first time in years we do not have to struggle to get out of our chairs. They look lovely with the new material and fit perfectly with our new carpet.

My experience with this upholstery shop has been great! I have used them several times, for different kinds of work. They have reupholstered and reconditioned several mid-century pieces for me, as well as a traditional set of French early 19th century camelback dining chairs. All were gorgeous, and done on time! Al worked with me to choose from his insane collection of fabrics, and choose the best quality for the best price for my budget. He went above and beyond the call of duty to pick up and deliver pieces. One trip he even came out to a creepy storage space when it was dark and rainy!
I recommended him to my neighbor when she needed two big armchairs with ottomans recovered. She had the same positive experience, and the chairs look fantastic.
Yes - you do need to follow up with them sometimes. They are very old world, and will not nag you about your stuff. This isn't a bad thing - for example, when we were having work done on our place, Al was happy to store some pieces until I needed them.
Are they cheap? No. A lot also depends on the cost of materials, and how complicated the job is. But that's true of all upholstery shops.
As far as I am aware, The hours posted for the Walnut Street shop are good - I've never not found someone there. But, I call ahead just to make sure.

Al was great - he picked up everything and worked with us to decide on fabrics and upholstery style. We were also renovating our place at the same time, and he was able to work around that for delivery as well.
His shop is full of wonderful traditional peices, but don't be fooled - these guys can do anything. When the furniture was delivered the finished job was impressive - beautifully finished and sleek. We've gotten alot of compliments. My extremely exacting neighbor loved the work so much, she has hired them to reupholster two armchair/ottoman sets.
I am about to use them again for a set of 6 antique dining chairs. Once again, Al has been great - taking time to look through upholstery books and help me choose just the right fabric.
Can't recommend them enough! Given the price and poor quality of new upholstered furniture, we are glad we found this outfit!
