The initial red flag was when he wanted all the money up front. I think it's pretty common that the labor pay is after the project is complete. I gave him a couple hundred deposit to get going. Other minor red flags were every time I wanted to ask questions or had a concern he would repeatedly say in some variation of positivity, "Yes, don't worry. It's going to look great. We will do a good job. Trust me," without directly answering my question or concern. Unfortunately since he only had Saturday available, the project wasn't complete until really late at night. By the time I got to see the "completed project" there weren't many lights in the house since I haven't moved in yet and without a quality flashlight, it was hard to see any detail errors.
The following day I saw the molding and was disappointed to see the excessive caulking that remained on the base molding. When I told Jason he said, "you just need to go back along and touch it up with paint." I told him the whole thing practically needs to be repainted with how much "touching up" there was to do. He said to just wipe off the extra caulking and repaint. First of all, when I pay for a project then I should not have extra work to do, but I figured OK if it wipes off easy, then it's not a big deal. However, since it dried, it's practically stuck there and anything that did come off, took paint off too. I stopped right away and called Jason back and told him to come look.
He came to look at it and refused to acknowledge how bad it looks. Again, some sort of words of positivity "This is simple. Just repaint over this. It will look good. Promise." etc. I had another guy there working on a separate project and he even stepped in and said when he does caulking he wipes it off right away with a moist sponge to avoid that issue. It will look terrible if I painted over it because of the blotches of caulking residue. Jason said that his guy will get a solution that wipes off the caulking. I told Jason to let me know when the guy goes so I can meet him there. Jason never informed me the guy went. I went to the place a couple days later and it looked like no work was done.
When I called Jason again he said his guy told him he spent 2-3 hours wiping off caulking. I took more pictures and sent them to Jason and showed him how bad the molding looks. I asked him to go back and wipe off the excessive caulking and repaint anywhere the guy took off paint along with the caulking. At that point, Jason said, "I don't do painting." I told him to take some responsibility for how bad the molding looks and fix it. He said that what he did was over the top for me as it was. He said he doesn't do caulking either, but that he was giving it to me as part of the discount. How can caulking not be part of installing the molding!? Jason acknowledged the molding left was excessive, but then would refuse to take ownership of fixing the problem.
I asked Jason if he always leaves his customers with extra work to do. He wouldn't answer, other than saying "I did good work there. I did special stair molding for you." Every answer was beating around the bush. I flat out asked him if he was going to go fix it or not. He said, "I'm going to go remove the molding completely because you don't appreciate good work." With that type of response from him I was done with him and told him I'm going to complain to the people who referred him. The company he told me not to tell about the project. When I said that, he said, I don't care. That's my brother who owns that company.
So at this point, complaining to CY flooring won't do much, so I am reaching out to other avenues.
I sincerely hope that I can help at least one person avoid Jason and the JK Interior Experts.
