They did a really, really good job. It's a steel roof. They were not the cheapest of the quotes that we got but they were really really good. We got them through recommendation from friends who had used them. We didn't see any cleanup. There was no rubbish anywhere in our garden. We don't remember but about a week. It included the garage.

Added a third layer roof that lasted until I received a form letter form the city in 2012 informing me that I had to do full tear down and new roof in order to be code.
Was unable to find listing for Davis Roofing at this time, so I ended up using a different company and getting a roof that leaked first time it rained that I have since had repaired by another roofer.
If I had found listing for Davis Roofing in 2012, I would have asked them to do the new roof as I was very pleased with their work in 1995 and recommended them to neighbors back then.

Kim made an excellent presentation with a comprehensive portfolio showing photos of the process and how his workers accomplished each project. I saw nice, clean looking employees wearing clean uniform shirts with the company logo on it. Kim explained how the process will go...  He assured me that the workers will be employees of his company... NOT day laborers, there will be a foreman on the job, they will clean up after themselves each day and he will check in on the job each day as well. What we got was something else entirely.
The workers were the scuzziest looking characters we had ever seen. Needless to say, there was no clean shirt with the company logo on it. Now I realize that roofing is not a tidy job...  workers get dirty... filthy even, but these men showed up looking filthy. There were a few areas in the overhang, over the windows that needed replacement boards where there was rotted wood. Whenever I would check the area after it was completed, I found the wood they used to replace the rotted wood looked like it had been used, charred and pretty much as rotten as the wood they were replacing. We expected new, clean wood to be used. I saw this in several places. When I tried to explain to the foreman that this was not acceptable, he had difficulty understanding me. So we had to call Kim to come to the house and see for himself and act as interpreter for us. The cruddy wood was replaced with new wood. There were a few occasions when we had to ask Kim to come to the house to correct a situation. Each time, it was getting longer for him to respond; clearly giving the impression that he was avoiding us. What concerned us was if we found problems with their work that we could see... what was going on overhead on the rest of the roof that we couldn't see? Who knows the condition the plywood that they used. The workmanship that we could actually see did not inspire confidence.
As for clean-up each day... that was a joke. Every night my husband would look over the work that had been done... picking up nails, wood and shingle scraps as well as garbage tossed in the bushes. They would leave their hot-plate (for preparing lunch) on top of a table in the middle of the patio. Every day it was something else, even after voicing our concern.
Needless to say, they completed the job. The very next day there was a very light rain. The rain water leaked into the dining room exactly where it did before. Kim brought his foreman out and he repaired it immediately and the leak stopped.
What I found interesting was... that was the only place the roof was leaking. In my first discussion with Kim, I told him that was the only leak. Kim said that it impossible to tell where the source of the water is coming from since water travels...So, we re-roofed the entire house. So how is it that they knew exactly where to fix the leak THIS time?
We don't think Kim was forthcoming with what we were to expect... with their workers and their quality. I am also suspicious that these were day laborers doing the work. We would never refer this company to anyone. Yeah... we got a new roof... but it sure wasn't worth the aggravation.
We are just posting this review now because we just joined Angie's List. We are about to do some more renovations on our home and we do not want to have the same experience. This site is such a terrific source of information. Thank you, thank you Angie!!!

JNDavis roofing repeatedly ignored my service call one year after their work finished.  All that I wanted was for them to check and fix some roof tiles at my expense.  This company definitely is not here to support their customers.  Once they make the money from the initial project, they will do anything to not have to hear from you again.  I'm p***** off about how unprofessional they are and will make sure people are aware of their bad behavior.

The process went very well.  Kim gave us 3 quotes for 3 different products.  The company was flexible with our schedule and finished in the timeframe stated.

We have given this company two other projects totaling $25,000 in 2008. We had no problems with their work at that time.

Kim Smith, the owner, came out to give the estimate and was very thorough in his explanation of what we had and what he could do. They tore off our leaky, nasty roof and replaced it with a cool roof (the white membrane reflects heat) that is heat welded so it won't leak. He said it would keep our house noticeably cooler in the summer and he wasn't kidding. A few weeks later was a heat wave and we didn't need to turn on our air conditioning even though it was in the 90s. We did have a leak during the next rain, and Kim came out to check on it. Even though he said it was not due to their work (of course he would say that), he spent two hours (no charge!) on our roof repairing it himself and it has been fine ever since. They did a great job, fast and clean, and for the same amount of money as our other estimates (for non-cool roofs).

My elderly parents' roof began leaking during very heavy rains. The leak started on a Sunday. I called four or five roofers from Angie's List and JN Davis was the only company to even call me back. They were understandably swamped with work since so many people were having problems in the storms. But they were willing to send a man over the next day. They also gave me some tips on things we could do ourselves to alleviate the problem. In the end, my husband went up on the roof and cleared leaves away from a drain, which was causing the problem. That stopped the leak, so we called them back to cancel. However, the roof still needs to be redone and I will definitely call them back to get a price quote. I appreciated their responsiveness in the emergency situation.

A new coat of La Polla was applied to the roof. New metal coping of parapet was was also installed. Overall I'm very happy with the whole process.

The estimate cost was reasonable, although not the lowest. The work description provided in the estimate was excellent and is the main reason we selected the company. The work was done promptly and on the date we agreed to. Couple of small glitches: the workers broke one tile on the roof parapet and they did not have a replacement. Fortunately I have some old tile pieces they could used to cover temporarily. Eventually, I will have to go look for a permanent replacement. In addition, they do not have any paint for the flashing they installed around the chimney. Again, we did plan to repaint the outside of the house. So that is OK. Otherwise, we will be left with an unpainted flashing piece subjected to weathering. The repairs looked good and have not leak yet!

We got bids from three companies. He was very vague on his estimate. Somebody else had given us a total breakdown and we showed it to him and he said that yeah he would do that. He didn't write anything on his estimate. He just wrote the amount that it would cost and didn't give a detailed estimate. We were not pleased with that and had a bad feeling about it. His price was in the middle of the other two. He was a nice person but he didn't present himself well.

My sense is that this business has more work than they can handle, and they have no problem letting you know that. Good for them, but bad if you're a customer that doesn't want to feel as if they could take or leave your business. My initial call was promising. I explained that I had 2 leaks and the scheduler apologized that it would take a few days to get to us - no problem. I gave her explicit instruction to call my father to schedule because I would be out of town. On they day they were to come out, the office did call my father and scheduled a time to come out, however, Kim, the actual guy who comes out and bids jobs, called my phone instead of my father's. My phone was out of range so I got the message stating that he was not coming over unless I called him right back, immediately. My father, who had been hanging out at the house all day waiting for this roofer, called him back, but was told it was too late and that he was already too far away to come back. He basically doesn't have time to wait on his customers, the customer must be available when he is, because he's got plenty of other jobs to get to. Mind you, I called them originally because they are located in Pasadena, blocks from my house. My dad explained that he had been waiting all day and THEY called the wrong number. Not his problem, our problem. The sentiment was that they didn't really care if we called another roofer - 'do what you need to do I've got plenty of work' was the conveyed feeling. Kim said to call the office and schedule another time. So we arranged for him to come out the following week, however, the woman at the office sounded rather annoyed that we had to reschedule implying that it was somehow our fault that Kim called the wrong number. The logic was that because I made the initial call, but then my dad was to meet them, even though the instruction couldn't have been more clear, it was definitely OUR problem. Hello, I'm the customer, aren't I? Anyway, scheduled another visit for the following week. Kim came out, met my father because I was at work. He was very nice, and matter of fact about the situation. Came down off the roof and said that it had been originally installed incorrectly and that we needed a new roof. Period. This was the only apparent solution. He was going to prepare 3 bids to completely replace different sections of the roof. More than a week has passed, and we have yet to receive the bids. I hesitated writing this review too soon, but it has now been 19 days since my initial call and we don't even have a bid yet. Based on my initial phone call, I had high hopes for this company. Local, family owned, in business for a generation. So far though, it just seems as if they must have so much business that they don't have time to deal with everyone. I guess it's a good position to be in, but it's just bad business to leave potential customers hanging like this...money on the table. If there is a sudden change, I will happily write a follow-up to this review, but in the meantime, I'm moving on to other vendors. The thing is, had I just rec'd a bid in a timely fashion, and it was a fair price, I probably would have had them do the work and forgotten about the initial events.

The lady on the phone kept me on hold for several minutes...then finally was able to offer me an appointment in 2 weeks that didn't meet my schedule needs. We could not find a time that worked- they did not want to come out in the afternoon, only morning (when I was working). They did not seem very eager at all to have my business. I guess times are going well for them to turn down business! She said to call back in about a week and maybe they could "squeeze me in". No thanks. Unprofessional.

Terribly. They were supposed to fix the roof on "either Tuesday or Wednesday". They did not show up again and didn't call to tell me why. I left a message asking why they didn't come and when they could come. No response. How do they stay in business?
Response from J N Davis Roofing Co

"Our company is a very prompt and reliable, we have been in business "since 1929" and take pride in our service. We did give a written estimate for this small job, the owner signed a contract with us to do the repairs and we scheduled the job accordingly. The husband was contacted via email and telephone confirming our workers to perform the repair on Tuesday, June 1st. We did the repair as scheduled. The client informed us they had to work, which is the case for most of our jobs, so we went and performed the work they signed the contract for. When we tried to collect payment for the work, the client had contracted with another company for the same repair the next day. It seems they repaired what we had already done. The owners were in the process of selling the house and I'm sure were under a great deal of stress. We did do our part and it's very unfortunate to have this type of situation. We have 1000's of satisfied and happy customers. We still have not been paid for our work."

He inspected the roof and I was very pleased. He told me the various options and costs. He was very much more professional than previous representatives from another company that had come out. I am still awaiting the actual estimate. He was very professional and I would trust his judgment more than the other company that came out. He gave me the information I wanted and he is going to do a specific work report. I was kind of apprehensive when he was discussing the costs.

I called and left a message. They called back and set up an appointment. The roofer came but needed a longer ladder. He came back the next day and completed the work.

The job turned out wonderfully. He was very honest and even though I insisted that I needed a new roof he told me I didn't. He save me thousands of dollars and did the work that needed to be done. He could have went ahead and put on a new roof, but he's a very honest and nice man. They were able to finish everything within just one day and I thought the price was more than fair. It has withstood all the rain we had so far. I would rate him and his workers and "A" across the board.

no problems, did the work professionally. i needed misc. roof repairs, including replacement of some shingles. the foreman was very knowledgeable and his crew was excellent. later, i obtained a bid for replacement of my roof, and while not the lowest bid, i feel that this outfit would do an excellent job and stand behind their work. what more could you ask for?
