Byron was one of 5 estimates I got for the backsplash (being very wary after all my contractor problems), and he was the 2nd highest estimate. However, he had a clear plan for how to make the edges look best, and to deal with my walls, which are a little wavy (my house is 80 years old). The backsplash looks phenomenal. I accidentally ordered too few of the corner pieces, and he went to the tile store himself to get one. Every day, the crew (well it was really just Byron and one other guy) was on time, and worked quietly and efficiently. They always left the kitchen completely clean. The floor repair was remarkably inexpensive and looks a million times better. Friends that have come over have really noticed the difference. I was really impressed that he used the tiles I had left over from the first installation, and even used his tools to make the bullnose, so I didn't have to buy any more tiles. The carpentry and ceiling repair went well also and were done for less money than I expected. The crew for the ceiling repair was three guys in addition to Byron and they also worked efficiently and left the place clean each day. They were careful with my newly installed kitchen cabinets and countertops, and put covers on the floor and plastic over all the cabinets, counters, and appliances. I can't say enough how pleased I was with the crew's cleanliness. It really was a night and day difference with workers I have had at the house in the past who have left messes everywhere. I absolutely plan to hire Byron again when I am ready to do some tile work in my bathroom, and now I know that he can install my cabinets in there as well. I know Angie's list is focusing on whether contractors are licensed or not these days, but I have to say that all of the (many more than listed here) mistakes made during my remodel were made by my licensed contractor (with an "A" BBB rating), and Byron is the one who had the strong work ethic and fixed all my problems. He really turned my remodeling nightmare into the dream kitchen I was wanting.
Description of Work: I initially hired Byron to put in my ceramic tile kitchen backsplash. He was recommended to me by the place I bought my tiles after I'd had problems with the contractor who installed my floor tile. Byron did an excellent job on the backsplash, and he then offered to help do some repair on the floor as well, which by then had been botched even further as the contractor attempted to fix it. The floor had been installed with the tiles unlevel and some crooked. Byron dug out many individual tiles that were the worst, and he also fashioned a bullnose edge for a step that had been tiled with a sharp edge and looked terrible. He dug out unevenly applied grout and re-grouted the floor. Byron has carpentry experience also and offered to help with some additional problems created by the contractor during my kitchen remodel. The ceiling was left very uneven with a height difference of 1 1/2 inches after a wall was removed, and the kitchen cabinets were installed with a gap of only a couple of inches between the tops of the cabinets and the ceiling. Ideally, crown moulding would have been applied there, but the ceiling was too uneven. After 2 plasterers told me the ceiling was too uneven to fix (at any price!), Byron brought in a crew and leveled the ceiling perfectly and bought crown moulding to match my Ikea cabinets and installed it. He also fixed some crooked drawer handles, adjusted the swing of many of my doors, installed wooden thresholds between my hardwoods and the tile, and even installed some trim around the edges of my butcher block countertops, which had been cut too small and left gaps between the counters and the walls.
