My greatest annoyance with Mr. Rooter is that they always want to sell you some super expensive service. Fist the plumber comes, discovers the problem, then sends for the supervisor to give you the nightmare scenario and close the deal. This is how we got involved with our first super expensive repair with them. Before I signed that contract I checked the Better Business Bureau and Angie's List, for reliability, and talked to a local inspector to see if the job really needed to be done. It did - and the inspector even rated Mr. Rooter's work highly.
Still, on the two calls I've made to them since that time - both the water heater repair mentioned above and an earlier minor issue - they have found something seriously - and expensively - wrong with the plumbing under the house. On both of these occasions I called our very reliable handy man for a second opinion and he said they were nuts. Granted, ours is an older home, but I really don't like being "up-sold" every time I call the plumber. Maybe they're not as responsive now that they know I'm not biting on any more nightmare plumbing scenarios.
What IS good about them is weekend prices. Since they have people on board seven days a week, it's not overtime if you need them on a Saturday, which, as I recall, is how I got started with all of this in the beginning.
I knew that being in a mobile home I needed a particular type. After I got home I checked the water heater and it blatantly said, and quot;NOT FOR USE IN A MOBILE HOME.and quot; Uh, what? My sister also needed a water heater one week later and it was half the price!
Never, never use this company. Want a good one? Use Noyes Plumbing.
Showed up in less than the 60 minute estimate.
Daniel Williams was professional, positive, and friendly.
Took a look at the valve, answered all my questions (and I ask a lot of them). Explained options. Provided estimate on cost and time to fix. Costs was preprinted in a book which made me feel a lot more comfortable then just someone providing a number.
Daniel left to get the part and returned within 15 minutes or so.
Fixed the part.
Checked that the leak was resolved.
Found another leak down stream at another irrigation valve. Tightened that valve. Provided tips.
Then did the walk through and again answer all my questions and providing tips, e.g. how often to replace water heater, name of the tool to replace kitchen faucet fixtures.
Would call and ask for Daniel again if I have any more issues.
I contacted Mr Rooter and asked that the system be removed. He agreed to do so but said there would be a charge of $1100. I feel there should be no charge to remove it and a complete credit of the $2700 be given since deception was employed. In the final analysis I had lost a water softener and what Mr Rooter replaced it with, at great expense, was NOT a water softener.
Take note that in trying to be fair you will notice that we only asked for a refund of the $2700 and not the full $4273 that we paid since we happily paid for the immediate emergency services they did of cleaning the pipes and water heater.
On 5/29 I put the unit on bypass and the controller on "vacation" effectively stopping it's operation. I didn't want to be seen as using it when I wanted it removed.
In the end what we are warning others against is that this company took advantage of an elderly couple on a holiday weekend emergency, in the middle of the night. We had nowhere to turn and had to take them at their word that all of this was what was needed to take care of our problem.
We since have written to them and asked them to take back their Purifier at a much reduced price, but they never even answered us.
We just want no others to be fooled by this company and taken advantage of the way we were.
technician offered to come back and put a camera in the line as part of the original fee. It took us 4-5 weeks to schedule the camera due to our schedule. When the technician arrived on Apr 5, he brought the salesman with him. We were given a DVD of the sewer line and told we needed to replace the under house sewer line and the charge was $15,000.00 and would take 3-5 days. We decided to get other estimates.
I would highly recommend him and the company, which I have used in prior years.
The service man (Wade) arrived within an hour of my call. The total time performing the service was about 35 minutes. The drain was cleared, the connections tightened, and the service was efficient and professional.
The service technician was personable (important) and professional, and willing. He was very impressive, and I would have him back at any time. I asked many questions about other plumbing issues, he communicated easily and professional about them. His equipment (snake) was the CLEANEST I have ever seen. He verified that he was cleaning the designated lines, and questioned professionally about our knowledge of the clean-outs and plumbing connections on the house. When I expressed concern about the water leaking from under the sink, he immediately went to check the connections on the piping.
At the beginning of the job he was clear about the cost of the job. He told me the price and asked if that was acceptable.
If there were any downside to my experience, it would be that I thought the work was expensive. I had thought the 125 dollar an hour price from the other call I made was expensive, but it probably would have been cheaper if I had gone with that company (Carroll, in SB). The problem, of course, is that one is dealing with a minor crisis and it is difficult to shop around. In retrospect, the and quot;drain blockageand quot; consumer is in a difficult position. In my case, one company offers a flat fee, and the other hourly. It is difficult to get true value for pay in this situation.
So, I'm happy with the guy who came out and the result. I'm not happy with the cost.
BTW, I used Yelp, Google, and Angie's list to try to front load this transaction. I was not satisfied with the information on ANY of the services. I again communicated to Angie's list (which I pay for) that services should be more specific to my city, Santa Barbara. BUT, Google and Yelp were no better in this minor crisis for any information. Neither was the Better Business Bureau (a logo on the Mr. Rooter Yellow Page ad), which did know of the phone number and address of the and quot;Mr. Rooterand quot; that I called from the Yellow Page ad.
