deck cleaning
 + -1 moreWe were very impressed with Matt. He was one of the two contractors who were prepared to work with us to salvage and repair the deck, rather than replace all or part of it. This resulted in huge savings over the cost we would have incurred with the ones who would have replaced the deck. We were not interested in replacement because we do not know how long we will remain in the house. I had two reasons for choosing Lamorinda Deck Care over the other contractor who was prepared to repair the deck. The other contractor's quote was confusing, so that I had to ask him to clarify it, whereas Matt's quote was entirely clear as to what he would do and what the cost would be. More importantly, I got the impression (subsequently confirmed to me) that he has a real background in wood maintenance (I think he has a degree in a related field). So he is not just a guy with some tools and stains, but somebody who actually understands wood and the pros and cons of various types of wood treatments. Matt and his crew scheduled the work to start in a few days, and they were prompt in starting and completing it. I think that in several respects, Matt found more damage than he expected, and had to replace a few boards that he expected to re-use. But we were not asked to pay extra for this extra work, whereas another contractor had made a big point of warning us that the cost would go up if more work was needed than they anticipated. Matt returned a few days later to build the small platform at the front of the house, and finished that project the same day.
Description of Work: We have a very large deck behind and on the side of our house. We have not stained or maintained it in years, and as a result it was in bad shape, especially the parts that get a lot of sun exposure. Some of the steps were collapsing, there were areas where the supports were rotting, etc. In the front of the house, we also had a small platform in front of our utility cabinet that was collapsing. We got 4 estimates, as I recall, on the deck work. Two of them wanted to replace all or part of the deck, with estimates of up to about $20,000. The other two were prepared to do repair work, as necessary, and then refinish the deck. We chose to use Lamorinda Deck Care (Matt Calkins, owner) to do the repair and re-finishing work. Matt stripped the old stain, deep-cleaned the wood, brightened the wood and ph balanced it, de-furred the wood, sanded it, and countersunk the nails and screws to the extent necessary. He also replaced and reinforced some failing joists, re-built the failing steps, and replaced several boards that could not be salvaged. He then stained and sealed the entire deck with a paraffin-based stain. On the front platform, he constructed a new one (better reinforced and anchored than the original), since the old one could not be salvaged.
