Boyce's Roofing and Repair reroofed my house in August 2014. Jim Boyce was personable until the proposal was signed, and then his attitude changed drastically. The entire job was started and finished in 4 days as originally estimated, thanks to his crew of workers. Jose who was the foreman was very professional and always willing to explain the process. And I thought the job looked fine at that time in August. (1) in September 2014 I gave him a good rating, but in November after the first rains and when I let him know a spacer between the rafters was broken by his people, he came out and decided it wasn't important, so refused to fix the wood spacer and I had to hire someone to fix it. (2) Now, after a hard rain in San Diego, the first rainy season after 2014 season in my area, I noticed a dripping sound coming from the attic above my bathroom that started with the rain and ended after the rain. I called him and asked him if he would have someone come out and assess if there was a roof leak and he is refusing, especially since there is no wet spot in the ceiling. He said it costs too much to send someone out. When I informed him the place above the shower has a hard shower lining and wouldn't show a wet spot, he still refused. His people boarded up the access to the area over the bathroom where the dripping sounds came from, and I can't get into that area in the attic to look for myself. He said the metal flashings can sound like a drip, however, he removed all the metal flashings on my roof when his people reroofed. I wonder what its going to cost me if this is truly a leak and he doesn't honor his contract that states clearly that there is a 5 year guarantee on all workmanship performed by Boyce's Roofing. Especially with the El Nino rains anticipated, I want him to come out at an appropriate time and assess the leak and make repairs as necessary before the rains start.
"I just thought I would respond to you, we actually did come back and clean your gutters. They were finished within 2 days after we talked (about 7 weeks ago). If you have your son get up on the roof and look you will see that they have been done. I'm sorry you have been fretting over this in the past 2 months. I checked with my crew and they said no one was home the day they did it, and they didn't leave a note on the door. I apologize for the poor communication. Thank you for faith in us as your home care partner. We do take our responsibilities to you very seriously. We will be working on our communication skills as a team because of your comments."
"Thank you for your response. I want to take a moment to respond back to you. The day I went out to the property at our appointed time, I went to the property associated with your account. We had agreed to meet that day, but you didn't show up - at either place. It is helpful to us to have the customer present when doing a prepaid service. There is no margin to these kinds of service, so it is not to our advantage to not meet with the customer, not dialogue with the customer, or come to some sort of agreement at the time of the inspection for any additional services required. We spoke on the phone while I was at your property and I gave you a complete rundown of what kinds of issues you were facing on that roof. We spoke about your other property, which I am still glad to go out and look at for you. A phone call from you to arrange that meeting would have been more than sufficient for me to make the appointment. It would have given me a more confident feel that I would actually get to meet you on the job. I regret that you felt more inclined to use Angieslist to communicate with us."
"I wanted to take a moment to again reiterate the purpose for our service is to do some very minor repairs and to give you a professional, straight forward report on the condition of your roof. Your roof is many, many years past needing done. There is damage to your eaves, your facia, and inside the house. Our approach to business is to "shoot straight". There, indeed, are many contractors out there who would be willing to take another $900, 1000, 1500 dollars from you. (whatever they could get) and you just had someone do that to you before we arrived. We cannot in good conscience do that to you or any other customer. It is our professional judgment that you are in a position of needing a new roof. No other option would do anything for you except waste your money. I'm sorry that we didn't rate higher with you, but I don't regret giving you our report and urging you to reroof the house. It is the best thing for you. And, sorry about the bad day you were having, I'm sure we added to it. Wish that we had come out at another time when you were feeling better."
"You are exactly right. I checked with our crew and we failed to come out and do the repairs I had agreed to. I don't have any excuse, we didn't make it out and my crew chief didn't advise me of it. This is an unusual event in our business. I certainly apologize and will be sending you a check for $99 to reimburse you."
