I am 50 years old and this is my 4th new car purchase. It is hands down the BEST car buying experience I have ever had or could ever hope to have in the future. And I HATE the car buying process. I had such a great experience that I am going out of my way to make sure people know that there is a sane way to purchase a new vehicle. Even if you don't live near the dealership, if you want to get a good deal on a car without haggling and you want a Toyota, come and check them out. The name of the dealership is One Toyota of Oakland and the reason it is named as such is because you get "one price" and "one person" and that is the absolute truth. If you love haggling over new car prices, this is not the place for you. But if you want a clear price and you don't want to talk to every department individually to get through the buying process, come and check them out. This story starts with a co-worker who went to the dealership and had a good experience. He told me about it, which is why I checked them out. When you go to the dealership, you will be greeted by a "greeter" and offered coffee / refreshments. You are asked what you want and if you say you just want to look around, a sales person will NOT approach you. Sales people are only allowed to meet people that have told a greeter they want to test drive a car or speak to a sales person. You may get greeted by several greeters if you are standing near the entrance, but they are all very nice and they are NOT trying to sell you anything. But my story starts differently and in my opinion, amazingly. I had a 2004 Prius that I loved but I was interested in the new 2010 model. My 2004 was in good condition but it had been in an accident 18 months ago with $7K damage, all repaired and in like-new condition from my perspective. I checked Kelly Blue Book for trade-in on the car and it was $6216 in good condition. I decided to ask One Toyota how much they would give me for the trade in to test their adherence to one price. I filled out a form online and within 5 minutes a sales person called me (I told them they could on the form). His name is Isaac and he is now my "car guy". He actually gave me a trade-in range over the phone of $5500 to $6500 but said that for a used car, they really needed to have it there and have a mechanic look at it and check out the service history and collisions and all. I completely understood that. I thought the range was very reasonable given the KBB value and the fact that I disclosed the accident. That part of the story ends for now.... I asked a lot of questions about the 2010 car. I set up a test drive for a few days later. I exchanged a number of e-mails with Isaac and he answered my questions. The day before the test drive I decided I was not ready to buy because I found out that Toyota's end of year is March 31 and I wanted to see what deals they would offer in March. I e-mailed Isaac and canceled the test drive. My coworker did something similar. Then on Mach 2, the new deals were announced and put on One Toyota's web site. My coworker went down and bought a 2010 Prius that day. He had a different car guy that he also really likes. I sat in his car. I saw the new deals and decided I was ready to test drive / buy (once I'm in the car I have a hard time not buying). I called Isaac and told him I wanted to test drive a car. I told him that I wanted to test drive it on the upcoming Saturday and that I would like to buy the car if I liked the test drive (I knew how much my coworker paid and he got the same car I wanted). I told Isaac exactly what I wanted and the color I wanted. He did not have the car at his dealership but would get one delivered by the test drive if I would put down a $500 refundable deposit. No problem - no risk for me, only work and risk for them. I test drove the car on Saturday and decided to purchase it. The car was $300 more than what my coworker paid and as far as I could tell, the only difference was the paint color. I asked for an explanation of the difference in cost between our 2 vehicles. Amazingly, Isaac went back and got the invoice for each vehicle and showed them both to me. My coworker's car was made earlier and was a model E. Mine was a model G. Toyota raised the price between the 2 models. Basically, my coworker got a good deal because the dealership did not raise the price of all the vehicles, but only the ones they had to pay more for. Wow - I get it. I pay more because the dealer paid more. I'm good with the price. Next Isaac goes back to figure out the trade-in, which involves a mechanic inspecting the car and such. And here's the real reason I KNOW this dealership is honest. I would have taken anything in the $5500 to $6500 range and been OK with it, especially since the car was in an accident. Isaac came back and told me that they would give me $7000 for my trade-in. This is AFTER I agreed to buy the car. They did not have to do that. I was blown away. The total buying experience was great. Isaac even told me that he would personally teach me how to parallel park (I suck at this) whenever I want. He will do this because he is my car guy, not a car salesman. Although I met many other people at the dealership, including the CEO and one of the owners, I only dealt with Isaac for all the actual car sales stuff. All the financial stuff, everything. And the dealership only offers a few things above the actual car, like extended warranty and prepaid maintenance. And that's also one price and not a pressure sell. The only negative thing about the entire experience is that the dealership is brand new and it took about 2.5 hours to actually do the purchase. The dealership has a goal of 45 minutes to an hour but they just aren't there yet. A few days after the purchase I went back to the dealership to pick up a manual that was accidentally not included with the car. While I was there, I was treated warmly just as I was when I was actually buying the car. I also saw my 2004 Prius on the lot with a tag of $9981. That is the price they will sell the car for. They won't haggle on it. It's about $3000 over what they gave me, but I know they replaced the carpet mats and detailed the car and probably performed some good cleanup service on it. It's a fair price for that car as far as I can tell. Summary - a win / win and a great start for me and my new car experience. Thank goodness there is a dealership out there that is willing to break the mold on car buying for the masses. I will definitely buy another Toyota and it will definitely be from this dealership.
