It started out fine, but quickly became an absolute nightmare. By the time we were finishing up, I just wanted them out of my house and would not trust them to attempt to fix the problems they created.
King Hardwood was recommended to me by a trusted friend. It's a family business, husband and wife. The came out to give me a quote and were really very nice, straightforward and seemed to know what they were doing. I had gotten other quotes, all were about the same amount except for Tulip, who were much higher and would take longer to do the work. Budget was an issue for me, so I hired King.
To start, they did not think it was necessary to drop off the wood prior to install. Usually the wood is dropped off at least 72 hours in advance so it can acclimate. I had to insist that they do this, which should have been my first warning, but at this point I had several projects being done, all scheduled by day, and so it would be a real problem to find another flooring company.
When tKing dropped off the wood, we reviewed the subfloor, areas that still needed work, and which existing floor boards would need to be replaced because they were damaged. We also discussed how much of the walls and built in cabinetry would be covered by King to protect from dust. I insisted I wanted everything covered up, at least to 8 ft. height. Mrs. King verbally agreed to these items.
I didn't live in the house yet, so the only things that needed to move were appliances. My contractor moved the refrigerator, and felt that the stacked washer and dryer were fine in their closet cabinet. The closet cabinet has a floor that is 4 inches higher than the hardwood, and it has a toe-kick area below the closet, sort of like kitchen cabinets. The washer and dryer hang over the hardwood by a couple inches, which you don't see when the closet door is closed. My contractor said that if they needed to move the washer, they would take care of it.
King showed up on time a few days later and got right to work repairing and installing. I left them to their work. The next day, I arrived and noticed that they hadn't removed all the baseboards. I reminded them to do so, and left them to work for the day.
I showed up later in the day and they were already sanding up a storm. They had not put up ANY plastic or tape to protect all the interior cabinets and walls. The walls in my house are rough redwood planks, so this was a serious mess already. I told them they needed to protect the woodwork! At this point, they did cover some areas, but not all, and of course the damage was already done, the house was covered in dust. At least now the walls would be protected from polyurethane splashes.
At this time, I also noted that they had left old, water damaged floor boards around the washer. I told them I wanted these boards replaced.
Next day, the sanding was done and the poly was going down, so I had no opportunity to check the work.
When I was able to walk the house, I was horrified by what I found. There were areas where the sanding had not been done correctly. And areas where the sanding machine had obviously been bumped into the cabinetry. There were streaks and blotches along the edges of the walls. The stairs had drips pouring down them. I think they hadn't removed all of the old stain, and so streaks of it were swirled around in the poly coat.
I met with the Kings, pointed out these areas and asked them to repair/buff out/FIX IT. They said they would but the repairs ended up looking even worse. I paid them to get out of my house, I was completely depressed over this situation. My new $5000 hardwood floors looked like I had done them myself! I know I shouldn't have paid them, but I was really upset and just wanted them to leave.
I spent 2 full days vacuuming the walls, ceilings, inside cupboards, etc. to remove all the sawdust. I made some repairs myself. I had to build out the cabinetry around the washer to cover up what they did to the floors in this area.
Now the floor boards in the new areas are actually cupping, and the edges of the boards are rough enough to snag my socks. So obviously I'm going to have to have the whole job redone as soon as I save up the money.
King Hardwood does not know how to do a professional, long lasting floor. They don't care how the floor turns out as long as they get their check.
