Grand Lake Ace is the very best hardware store in Oakland for getting advice. They realize they compete at some level with another hardware store. Since they don't compare favorably with another hardware store on price, they make up for it with amazing service and competence. They station a knowledgeable sales person on almost every aisle, and they actively ask you if you need help. What's more, they really know what they are talking about. Those guys have saved me a lot of trouble over the years. Also, unlike another hardware store you won't wait long to check out. They have a lot of registers, and are quick to open new lanes. Really, they focus and pride themselves on service, and they do a great job. Their prices are higher than another hardware store and parking in their lot is sometimes difficult.

This is a hardware store with old fashioned service. There are plenty of store clerks and they are all helpful and fairly knowledgeable. They know where things are located and will show you. They usually know the basics of what tool is for what project. There is convenient parking. Prices are reasonable. They don't play loud music. The place is clean and neat. I bought most of the items I was looking for. When I later had to exchange one item, they treated it as a routine transaction with no hassle (bring your receipt).
