We had one issue, where somewhere along the line during the demolition a piece of room fell to the ceiling and caused an indentation. They did not feign ignorance or anything. They reviewed the damage and they took care of it in about a day. They patched it, sanded it, and matched the paint perfectly. I can't even tell exactly where it was now. Also, they did some attic fan wiring, which was great. Overall, I can't be more satisfied with their work.
The receptionist at Hunter's is delightful and helpful.
Now for the problem we are having is with the the Golden Pledge Ltd. Warranty that Mr. Hunter had us get through the roofing process. They are not a good company to work with.
For over 3 months and 3 weeks I have been in a irritating stagnation with GAF. I told them that the roof is damaged and an Racoon has gotten into our attic. Several times the animal has gotten in and we spent the night getting him out. Now we have a skunk taking the same animal path.
I finally contacted Mr. Hunter and finally a warranty man came by to take pictures. That was three weeks ago. I have called several times and just found out that someone will be by to fix our home Aug. 17, 2015. So another three weeks.
In the mean time I called my AAA Home Insurance company and they are sending someone to take a look. See what can be done. Maybe a wire fence to block any animals.
In conclusion please think twice before entering any responsible agreement with GAF and Mr. Hunter because although this man knows his stuff and we have a beautiful roof, I don't think the follow up is very good, especially if you have a problem with your roof. I mean it is not my job to be stressed over this roof problem...that is what I paid them for. I think my being upset about this is rational and so be it.
Mr. Hunter has taken care of the problem and he gave me a refund from GAF. A good guy after all. Thank you!!
If you're in Los Angeles City and you re-shingle more than 50% of your roof, you now (beginning in 2015) have to use either the Sierra White shingle from GAF (or its equivalent from other shingle mfgrs.) or one of the new approved "cool roof" shingles, which cost more. These reflect more light & heat, and radiate absorbed heat more quickly than do regular shingles. They reduce the attic temperatures and reduce the "heat island" effect of a city full of dark roofs absorbing heat. Los Angeles City is now very concerned with reducing the heat island effect. We got the Sierra White as it cost less than the other colors and we preferred the look. It's pale, but far from white - more of a speckley gray.
We'd recommend Hunter's to anyone. If we ever get solar panels (Calif. PUC and the electric utilities seem like they want to shoot a big hole in this increasingly attractive option), we'll probably get them from Hunter's as well.
I had about four or five estimates, some a bit lower than Doug Hunter's, but we went with Hunter's Roofing based on our interactions with Doug Hunter himself. He put together a very professional proposal that included illustrations along with facts and figures that made it much easier to understand technical terms that are probably not in the vocabulary of most customers. The GAF Monaco asphalt shingles require installation by an approved GAF contractor. There were other approved contractors in our area, but Hunter's seemed to be and turned out to be the best fit for us. They weren't the cheapest estimate, but they included some room for unexpected material replacement and that was to our advantage because we had some unseen damage that may have made the cheaper estimates over Hunter's bid. Because of that our original B rating on price was adjusted to an A rating.
His workers were highly skilled and took care to protect our property and belongings from damage. They also did a good job cleaning up debris from removing the old roof or putting in the new one. The Monaco shingles are designed to look like traditional Mediterranean tile and need to be installed with greater care to make sure they are kept straight. We found no flaws with alignment of the shingles or with anything else.
Bottom line: We were very satisfied and would not hesitate to use them again or to recommend them to others.
I would definately recommend them to all my friends and family.
When the debris was cleared away, I could see that they had ruined my redwood decking. The careless throwing of roof debris from my second floor had caused huge gouges in the wood. When I complained to Mark, he made his workers go to the lumberyard to buy new wood to replace the ruined boards. The only thing they said to me was that "redwood is really expensive." No kidding. During the job, one of the guys worked really well, while the other took off to sit in the truck talking with girlfriend in Spanish on the phone it seemed like the whole time. When I finally asked him in English who was on the phone, He told me that he was "talking to the boss". I then replied in Spanish that it is interesting that he calls his girlfriend the "boss". Yeah. I speak Spanish fluently. Mark later admitted this guy was new and indicated he had a predilection for making personal phone calls on the job.
They finished the roof on time. Mark charged me $200 less than the quote because of the destruction and inconvenience caused by his workers. I was left to deal with the broken window myself. When the workers had left and I was settling up I mentioned to Mark that his workers had left left literally hundreds of nails around my property because of their carelessness. I showed him all of the nails on the ground. He picked up about thirty nails by himself. I was left picking up nails for months. Three months later one of the nails required a vet visit to pull it out of my dog. It is now NINE MONTHS since this roof was completed and I am STILL picking up nails that were left strewn around my house.
The roof itself is holding up well but we have not had any major rains to really put it to the test.. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I am updating this because while checking into a remodel a close friend who is a contractor checked out this roofing job. He told me that the finished roof seemed fairly well done with a few exceptions, but that for the square footage he felt I was seriously overcharged.
