On time and professional. He knows subject matter (Pre-calculus, Algebra 2) with ease. Understood homework problems with almost no time thinking and trying to solve. Gives alternate solutions. i.e. "look at it this way", " let's try this approach". Is flexible with hours and tutoring time frame @ 90 minutes per session, and days of week. Also, teaches in a calm and non-threatening way. Gives praise when deserved. Best math tutor yet.

My sons had very different issues - and John was terrific with both, and punctual which matters to us a lot. One son 'now understands series' which he had been entirely lost on in class despite his usually good math skills, and the other was able to target in on areas he needed for the upcoming AP test. John worked with our schedule and specific (and kind of peculiar) targeted needs. He is a real find!

My son was taking an online university calculus class and needed a private professor/instructor to instruct him on some new topics in Calculus. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to find a tutor that couldn't go beyond how to plug and chug through problems. John delivered 100%. 1) He responded very quickly to my initial phone call. 2) He set up the first tutoring session very quickly (same day!!) 3) He not only showed my son how to do problems, he taught my son from the ground up, showing his mastery of the material. He did this all and at the same time reaffirmed my son's confidence in his mathematical abilities. My son would be beaming with joy after he finished a tutoring session and then be able to fly through his homework.
I highly recommend John to any student who is struggling with math or one that is good in math but has a poor teacher (or no teacher). He is very professional but at the same time very down to earth and extremely easy for a teenager to communicate with.

What a fantastic tutor! John tutored two of my kids at different times for different reasons.
My son took the GED and passed all of the sections with flying colors except the math portion. It contained a lot of Algebraic problems. Not only had it been a couple of years since he had done Algebra but math was never his strong suit. He worked with John for a bit, getting up to speed on the basics and upon retake of the test, he didn’t just squeak by but scored above average.
My daughter went from failing Algebra 2/Trig to a final grade of B. Let me tell you, I did not hand John an easy task, especially since the teacher didn’t follow the assigned math book, used her own made-up handouts and didn’t follow any traditional methodology. Yet, John was systematic in his approach, assessing where my daughter was in her understanding and then formulated an approach he felt would best work for her. He wasn’t there just to make sure she got her homework done, he genuinely seemed to care that she understood the material.
I was usually within hearing distance from both of my children during their sessions. John was very patient and if he wasn’t able to get through one way he would change his approach until he hit an explanation that resonated with them. I could hear them going through the steps of a problem and if at any point they got it wrong, John was there, seeing where their thought process had faltered so he could build from that point. Both our daughter and our son really liked John, they felt comfortable with him and trusted his process and that speaks volumes where teenagers are concerned.
I would definitely hire John again. The investment was worth it!

I have used At Home Math Tutoring for several years with both of my children. Our first experience was with my son who was a Senior in High School attending Algebra 2. We decided to get him some tutoring and went to California State Northridge University to seek help, they recommended John Rubin. Our son at the time was struggling to get a "C" so we used John on a regular basis and the day before each test. From the first test on we saw a dramatic increase in his test scores. Long story short he finished the year with a "B". My son just used John again last semester for College Algebra. He found himself struggling we turned to John for some help and he finished with an "A" in the class. Also my daughter used John throughout the semester's of Geometry and Algebra 2. Her final grades in both classes were "A's" thanks to John. She had a "C" in both classes prior to using John. Excellent results, well trusted, good communication skills, book in advance to reserve best time, lay out a game plan before John comes to maximize your time!
