REC is also the manufacturer of the panels used on this project and the panels were made in Norway. REC also manufactures at two sites in the U.S.
The amount of safety gear and time to set up safety materials each day was very carefully done and never changed. To my surprise, an REC safety engineer arrived on the third day to inspect how the installers were following the company's safety rules. The surprise part was that he drove from San Luis Opispo and I am located about as far east as you can get in Los Angeles County.
Everything the installers did was with attention to detail. They did not waste time looking for parts or equipment, as their truck was fully lined with shelves and everything was put back exactly where it belonged for the next time. The work site was kept clean and you would not know they had been there after they left each day.
Good quality work, nice people, completed on time and passed inspection.
I chatted with Rick for a bit and gave him my 12 month electricity usage history. He quickly convinced me that I?d be better off with a much larger system than the previous lease company had suggested. We began going back and forth by email. Rick was super-responsive, quickly answering emails with detailed responses at a variety of hours. Once we settled on a size ? a 22 panel, 5.3kw system, Rick tried very hard to sell me on a pre-paid 20 year pre-paid lease through SunRun. This was extremely tempting; leagues better than the previous lease I came close to going with. I just wasn?t comfortable with not owning the panels at the end, so after much debate, I opted for an outright purchase.
Friday came, I signed the contracts, gave Rick my deposit, and the project was off and running! I was handed off to Kimberly Lewis, my project manager who would guide me through the rest of the process. She set up an appointment for a site survey. A couple weeks later, two gentlemen by the names of Holland and Joe came by to look at my roof and electrical system. Very nice guys; they clearly had a lot of experience and knew what to look for. Holland took measurements and many pictures so engineering could come up with a plan. It took engineering around 3 weeks to deliver a plan. Once that was done, Kimberly began working with my HOA. Kimberly did most of the leg-work, and kept in contact with them until our project was approved.
During this period I also received confirmation of my SCE Edison rebate ? at step 7. This is where REC demonstrated some truly impressive integrity. I think somewhere in the lease vs. buy debate, I lost sight of the rebate guarantee that Audrey had promised. It wasn?t anywhere in the contract that I signed, and in fact, all of the price estimates I agreed to were at step 7. After informing Kimberly what Audrey had promised, REC took the high road and agreed to pay the difference ? nearly $2,000 less, without a fight!
Once the project was approved, the install happened within a week. I didn?t catch the installers? names, but they were all pleasant, and got the work done in 3 days (Joe came back to help on Day 3). They originally had planned to use my full, existing panel by combining circuits to make room, but the electrician argued that a sub-panel would be the right way to go. REC installed the sub-panel and moved some of my circuits to it without altering the contract price. Day 4 was the inspection and we passed. Their work is done and it all looks great! Now I wait for my utility to give me permission to operate. I?m sure SoCal Edison is in no hurry for me to stop paying them, so they?ll drag it out as long as possible.
Another thing I was impressed with ? I referred a friend. REC gave me a $400 Visa gift card within a short period of him signing the contract. I was very surprised how fast they turned around the referral credit. From start to finish, I felt very well taken care of by the folks at REC. This was a big purchase and I truly feel I made the right choice in choosing them. Highly recommended!
