Alex was very personable and polite. He took my ideas and suggestions into consideration throughout the process. He was punctual and efficient in the use of his time. He gave me an initial estimate and a payment schedule. He walked me through the process of applying for the DWP's turf removal rebate program. We chose the new plants together, with their need to be drought tolerant - choosing primarily CA natives, with a few exceptions coming from other dry climates.
The design for the garden was something of a joint effort, given the constraints of the space. He removed the turf and arranged to have the detritus hauled to the dump. He then brought in organic mulch with which he amended the soil in the areas where the plants would be installed, as I have primarily very heavy clay soil. The pathway was marked and the edging installed. Alex arranged for the decomposed granite to be delivered, and when it came (on schedule) it was deposited on the driveway, necessitating him to have to haul it by wheelbarrow to the garden. Using a tamping tool, he made sure that the DG was installed tightly in the pathway area.
Using flexible 1/2" and 1/4" irrigation pipe he installed the irrigation system, such that each plant had a dedicated emitter. He purchased and installed the drought-tolerant plants, and finally laid decorative rocks.
This work was performed approximately one year ago and my garden has, by and large, done well in the interim. Although, I did lose some plants which have been replaced by other drought tolerants. However it has generally filled in nicely. I am still very pleased with the results and not only am I happy to recommend SoCal Gardens, but will be using them again at my rental property in Pasadena, where I am currently awaiting the PWP rebate before commencing the work.
