Learn from my Mistake. Pros & Cons Pros: * Roof was completed, ultimately (3/23 - 5/2) Cons: * Job postponed twice without notice; I had to call them re: no show. * 'Supervisor' attempted to double the estimate once the old roof was torn off and option of turning back impossible. Response to my objection: "I'm always the bad guy." This led me to believe this was a common practice of the company rather than an anomaly. 'CEO' later admitted that the 'Project Manager' had made a mistake in the initial proposal. We settled on a $7800 increase. * A $1000 down payment was agreed on. My credit card was charged $3000 * Crew was basically unsupervised. The only time I saw either of the Project Managers was at the initial proposal & when there was a request for a price hike. * It was reported that the crew had a habit of urinating over the edge of the roof during the project. * Skylight on one of the units was put on backwards. I decided to remove it completely at the request of tenant due to debris falling through * Worker fell through the opening of another skylight, alarming the tenant and damaging interior walls. When asked about this incident Project Manager initially denied it, then claimed it was being looked into, then stated the worker in question was not answering his phone. When following up, to my (rhetorical) question, "This is what I get for $20,000?!" Project Manager replied, "It's a job. Things happen." This was no comfort to me or the tenant who had a grown man fall from the sky into his kitchen. At this point the Project Managers were polite to the Tenants but consistently rude and belligerent with me, particularly when I pointed out that "...at some point someone needs to take responsibility for what's going on." * Project manager #2 refused to provide copy of estimate for additional work - I had to take a photo with my cell phone * Debris was being dropped into the open skylight; several phone calls were necessary to have the hole covered while work was in progress (4/3). * Though roof was reportedly sound, leaks occurred during the next rainfall (4/5&6). CEO admitted that they had neglected to seal one of the roof vents/flashing. * Mold was discovered due to the leaks, NewHaus gave me a bid of $15,000+ to perform the remedial work. Two subsequent bids from other "specialized" companies came in at considerably less. * Debris (coffee cups, water bottles) were left on the roof at the conclusion of the work, though the broom, rake, and wastebaskets kept on site to clean twigs and leaves from the roof disappeared along with the crew * Appointment was made with Notary Public to sign off with inspector; no paper work was provided to either me or the Notary, so we both had to sit and wait for delivery from NewHaus * For the fourth time I was assured that "Quality Control" would pull together the paperwork and sign off on the work, and for the fourth time I heard nothing on the day(s) this was supposed to take place * From the initial commencement date of the contract (3/23) telephone log shows 56 telephone calls to ascertain reports on progress (or lack thereof). This averages nearly 1.5 calls per day for over one month, with no resolution as of 4/30 * On the final day of signing off (5/2) Project Manager failed to provide the itemized list of charges/payments I had (twice) requested in order to assure that the misinformation on initial paperwork was correct, and he went on to question the veracity of my claims of payments. Calling the CEO to go over the list, he acknowledged that there was "no amount in the paperwork" for the $3000 that had been charged to the Credit Card. Fortunately, I had copies of the CC Statement for verification In short, should you decide to hire this company, get accustomed to hearing "It's not their fault" when anything untoward occurs. The work is guaranteed for 10 years and it is my sincere hope that no issue occurs regarding the quality of the work as I would not relish dealing with this company in the future, and I would definitely be concerned about either refusal to honor the warranty or sabotage in response to this review.
