Jose Rodriguez was removing a tree from my neighbors across the street in late 2011 when I asked him for an estimate for a large pine tree in my front yard. He estimated at $3000 for the entire tree, including stump removal and clean-up. I finally hired him in December and asked him to take out 4 oleander bushes, 2 dead cypress trees, and to trim 4 other trees in the backyard. He originally estimated that taking down my one pine tree would take about 2 days, but it took 3, and that was fine. I wanted the job done safely (rather than too quickly) by a licensed, bonded pro. (A friend of the family used a friend to cut his tree down, and the friend ended up falling out of the tree and dying, which made me doubly careful about whom to hire.)
I was very impressed by the intelligent and careful way Jose's crew took down the nearly 100-foot tree section by section. They worked as a team of about 4-5 workers each day, and no one sat around waiting for his turn. If a worker wasn't securing a rope to bring down a section, he was raking and cleaning up or chipping debris. They used a large truck for hauling tree debris and a large chipper to grink the smaller pieces. They shielded my windows and my neighbor's doors and windows with large sheets of pine and cleared debris off my neighbor's property as quickly as I requested.
They removed a picket fence in my front yard which was going to be replaced anyway at no extra charge. Jose had asked an additional $600 to take out the other 2 trees and 4 oleander bushes, as well as trim the trees in back, and I found this very reasonable. Later, he amended his original esimate on my tree to $3400, which I was fine with, because it did take longer, and it was a damned tall tree. In total, I paid $4000 for the full job, and it was done very well. His crew's teamwork is superb. No one wasted my time or theirs. Another neighbor across the street was so impressed, he hired them on the spot.
They also left me enough wood so that I could have good fires for a couple of years, and I made new friends with various neighbors who asked if they could take wood as well. I ended up moving 500 pounds of wood into my backyard after the work was done.
Jose is very likeable and impressed me with his knowledge of trees, identifying the species as he passed them by. He is a seasoned arborist who knows his stuff. And he did this all while suffering from a bad cold. His team was friendly, answered all my questions, and appreciated the Cokes and cookies I brought them each day.
My only problems were 3 broken sprinker heads by the heavy equipment, which also crushed a bed of my late mother's succulents. Fortunately, succulents are hardy and can be regrown.
