Before starting this process I met with a handful of well reviewed painters for estimates. Next time I need any painting done I know there's only one phone call that I'll make.
Estimate: We got a very good vibe from Anita, the owner, when she gave us the estimate. She was detailed, thorough, and enthusiastic, and she had good ideas and feedback on our color and decor choices. The price was also very reasonable ($2650), and thus we moved forward. Anita estimated the work would take 4-5 days. During the estimate, we communicated that our house (before we owned it) had previously been painted in a rush job with bad quality paint, no prep/sanding, and that the current state of the walls/paint was dismal and would require a lot of work.
Work: Anita's crew started, and things seemed to be rolling along fine. The first room or two looked well painted.
Issue #1: Our first stumbling block was a miscommunication about whether the baseboards and trim would be painted or not. After a few days of work, we noticed that in some rooms they were painted and in others they weren't. While the contract detailed what would be painted, we thought we had communicated that we wanted the trim and baseboards done in all rooms, and it was hard to notice on the contract that it was missing. I would recommend to Anita to clearly state in the future what is excluded to avoid this kind of confusion. Fair enough, it was our fault for not scrutinizing the contract so we agreed to pay an extra $400. Work continues: The work continued, although it seemed like 4-5 days would not be enough for all the work. As we expected, there was a lot of prep work required and Anita underestimated that in her time and dollar estimate.
Issue #2: After our last scheduled day, we came home to a very sloppy job in our kitchen. There was paint on our fridge, cabinets, dishwasher, windows, countertops...and it was an overall poor job. Our furniture/stuff was also all over the place and there was no effort to return it to where it was supposed to go. Anita supposedly inspected her painters work every day, so we asked her if she had looked at and approved the work in the kitchen. She said yes, of course that she always does. And then we started walking her through all the issues, and she seemed to realize it was unacceptable. She did have her crew fix all the issues, remove the paint from our appliances etc.
Issue #3: The next problem was that the painters damaged a piece of our newly finished wood floors, dented a cabinet, and spilled paint on our blinds. Again, Anita rectified all of these problems by reimbursing us for the damage.
Summary: Ultimately the work took longer than expected (which we were flexible about), and we had a lot of stress surrounding the poor job done initially in the kitchen, the damage to some of our property, and we had to be way too involved in the process than we should have been. Like I said, we are now satisfied with the way our house looks and Anita was committed to fixing the problems. But if I had to do it over again, I would have preferred an experience with a company where I didn't need to micro-manage and re-inspect their work, and where I didn't have the stress of my furnishings being damaged.
"As a business owner for over 18 years, I am very aware that some customers cannot avoid the frustrations caused by any type of construction (including painting) especially in occupied homes, small areas, and with pets. I always do my best to create a comfortable working environment. As far as the job pricing, the customer received a great deal for multi-colors and plenty of prep work. I'm happy that the customer was satisfied with the final results, and we will both remember that. Life is good, just add color."
