Contractor failed to obtain required city permits and the job was shut down day 1.
I lived with a backyard of mud from about 9/15 - 11/15, while the contractor obtained the needed permits. Hold ups included delays due to a patio cover plan that needed to be resubmitted after waiting 4 weeks for review/approval because one of the posts obstructed my outswing patio door. The contractor called this a "homeowner change", although plans were never provided for review before they were submitted to the city for permit approval.
Eventually a patio cover plan was approved, but I didn't get to review it first either. Again, I don't like the placement of the post.
My experience with this couple is that they were disorganized, do not know how to plan, and are unprofessional, just to name a few things. Numerous weeks of not hearing status, several instances of failing to do the promised tasks to move the project forward. One day, even a "forgot to go to the city" excuse which was not appreciated among so many delays. Several discussions about change requests that never were produced by Signature Patios, but they insist I approved "verbally". Communication was very frustrating, instructions were not followed leading to removing or throwing away items that should not have been.
When I removed them from the site and cancelled the contract after numerous mistakes, miscommunications, and downright frustrations is when it got really ugly. I had estimated they completed less than 25% of the work (being generous) and since I had already paid them 31% of the contract price, I would lose about $3K on this project gone awry. I was pretty shocked when I received a final bill for an additional $3,900, representing about 49% of the total contract price. After I sent cancelled checks to them showing I had pad $1,300 more than they record of, they reduced the amount, but the charges are still 42% of total contract price with less than 25% completion. She sent me emails demanding the money stating she needed to pay her workers, but what did she do with the money I already paid her that should have covered the demo cost and more?
The weirdest thing is that you cannot logically reason with this couple. I have tried to explain to them the math of work completion % and dollars earned, to no avail.
It looks like we are headed to court. I have to say I look forward to an objective 3rd party. I should have searched yelp first, there is a bad review of them in 2012 that I missed that indicated some of these same issues.
