We had already been pitched by a company offering a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and had heard about others offering leases. For us, the best choice was to buy a solar PV (photo-voltaic, AKA solar panels) system outright. For this, Green Stock Solar was fantastic. Their pricing was far and away the best. They were so easy to work with, and the quality of the installation was perfect. I really appreciate that they even took the time to paint the conduit to match the exterior of the house and the roof.
Green Stock uses name-brand equipment. They install "microinverters" by Enphase, which I'm convinced is the best way to go. With Enphase, I'm able to monitor my solar system via the web. I can see how much each panel is producing at any moment, and I can see the numbers month-to-date, year-to-date, from-inception . . . you name it. With federal and local solar incentives, we expect to save enough on our PG&E bill to pay for the system in less than five years. And vs. the competing PPA arrangement, purchasing outright from Green Stock will save us approx. $17,000 over the expected 20-year life of the system.
Advice: get educated when purchasing a solar system. There are three primary methods: 1) outright purchase, 2) Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) - the company owns the system, and you're obligated to pay for every watt it produces for a long time (eg: 20 years), 3) a lease. Any of these three may be right for you, but DO make a well-informed choice.
For us, the outright purchase was the best, and Green Stock Solar ended up being the perfect company for getting that done. They were prompt, professional, and great to work with all the way around.
