The work that was completed was fine. Unfortunately, the job was not completed as contracted. Sometime on the second day of work, the owner told me he was running out of time and asked if it would be okay if he did not cut some of the trees into 16" rounds. I was not satisfied with this and started to tell him so. Then he told me if he had to stay at my house to cut my logs into rounds he would not be able to go to my Mother-in-law's house and do her trees (the tree removal on my lot was a birthday gift from my Mother-in-law, and the jobs were bid as one). He told me he had given her a good price but the job had taken longer than anticipated.
Now I was stuck. I could tell him I was sorry he had underbid the job but that he had agreed to drop certain trees and cut them into 16" rounds, not to work a certain number of hours. If I did so, my Mother-in-law, who was paying for the work, would not get her trees removed. I reluctantly let him leave about 20 logs, which I am still cutting into 16" rounds for splitting.
I was telling this story to some friends. I had not told them the name of the tree service but one asked "Was it Proper Pruning?" I told him it was and he told me the guy had done the exact same thing to him, a few years ago. My friend had contracted to have several, specific trees dropped and cut into rounds. Proper Pruning started the job but never finished. When my friend contacted the owner to find out when the job would be finished he was told "I bid you one day's work and I gave you one day's work."
Another guy at the table told of the negative experience he'd had with Proper Pruning. It was a bit different, and not worth going into, but it had to do with the owner's surly attitude.
I will not use Proper Pruning again.
