I think they seemed a little bit high on the price, just a little bit. They asked me for pre-authorization up to  a certain amount and I kind of got the feeling that they would go to that amount. They fought me on this, I gave them $200 and they actually wanted me to go higher, they wanted me to go like $300. I said well I'll give you $200 because I don't know, I may be busy when you're out there so I'm trusting you for the first $200. If it's just a basic kind of service call it shouldn't be more than $100-$150. They ended up charging me $200 for the full thing and I don't know how much time they spent there. The tenant was happy because she got her air conditioning  working. Their service was good. The guy was very nice. I got the vibe that they were trying to get me a little bit on the price. I would use them again only because when you need it you have to do it. For any big jobs I would check their prices against others but for a small quick thing where I need to have someone come out and deal with a tenant who is baking in the sun. I'll pay the extra $50 I guess just not to have the problem.

I have used Lane's Air Conditioning for over a decade, and can honestly give them my very highest recommendation.  John and his team are professional, knowledgeable (offering suggestions about improvement and money saving tips), and provide an outstanding value for my dollar.  They esxcel in both handling day to day issues as well as major projects.
I want to add that previously when I had an emergency during a heat wave, Lane's went above and beyond fixing my unit.  John came out after hours despite the fact that he'd been working other projects all day.  Couldn't ask for more.

They were very professional and knowledgeable, but too expensive. The experience was good.

"I am sorry to say that most bids recieved by folks from my competitors do not include city license and permit fees. Or required state certification testing of the finished system installation. These costs we include in all of our proposals."

Mr. Lane and his assistant were prompt, courteous, and professional. Unfortunately for me, I did not pass the pressurization test the first time and so the original installer had to make necessary fixes. Mr. Lane was very cooperative in scheduling his time to do a retest, which passed. He was very prompt in sending me the paperwork which I had to submit.

Poor Service
Response from LANE'S AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING, Inc.

"This service estimate was for a rental property in Azusa [not the address he is listing]. The diagnosis was a failed gas valve in a wall heater, and, the property owner wanted us to remove a "used" gas valve from a 2nd wall heater at the same property and install it in the failed wall heater. We do not install or re-install "used" parts and can not offer a guarantee by doing so. We don't condone using "used" parts on gas appliances. This practice would be unsafe and un-professional. I am sorry this Angie's List user failed to see the hazard that this type of work could cause."

AC was runnng hot and kept burning out fuses. I used Angies List to find Lanes. They were able to come the next day, and in fact showed up 30 minutes early. They did call in advance to ask permission to come early, which was nice. John walked me through the problems and gave me the opportunity to approve all fixes. They included removing excess refrigerant, removing burned out wiring and washing the outdoor condenser coil with a particular detergent. John and his assistant were here for about 2 hours in all. Overall I thought the service was appropriate for the price (approx. $150), and I was able to use the coupon I found here. I would use them again.

I called John on the phone (normally his receptionist answers, but since she wasn't in, he picked up directly). I had previously cancelled an appointment with another company because the technician did not show up on time and I received no call (as promised). Fortunately, John was able to schedule an appointment for the same day. He said he would show up between 3:00 and 5:00: he arrived around 3:20. John fairly quickly identified the problem--a broken thermostat--and checked the a/c unit. He determined that the refrigerant was very low and added 4 pounds. He told me that it was likely due to a leak, but that finding the leak would be very expensive (so we did not do anything). He also checked the wiring in the furnace and indicated that it wasn't wired properly. He fixed the problem. After doing all his work, John and his assistant made sure the system was running properly, and it certainly seems to be in much better operating condition than before. So, in general, I was pleased with his service. I do have one small complaint, however: price. Overall, I'm sure what I paid is competitive. The total charge of $350 included labor, the thermostat, 4 pounds of refrigerant (which was very expensive), and his "tune up" (presumably, I received some discounts, so the "regular" price might have been higher). However, after John left, I did a quick search for the particular thermostat he installed. I found it online for $32.86. Now, I'm sure John is able to purchase these products for even less, so I was charged more than twice, almost three times, what the unit was actually worth. Curiously, John was going to install a more expensive thermostat at first, but I guess he did not have one in his truck. According to my research, that more expensive unit (the Braeburn 5000) would have been closer to the $85.00 he charged me for the cheapest unit, the Braeburn 1000, which I got. (John, if you're reading this, I wouldn't object to either a refund or an upgrade to the more expensive unit, even though I said I didn't need the features, I expected to be charged for the actual cost of materials used.) Because I was very happy with the rest of his service, I would still recommend John's company. But, being hit for huge, huge mark up for the thermostat does make me a little wary and unsure if I will use his company again (to my mind, a 10~20% mark up *might* have been acceptable, but not a 250~300% mark up).
Response from LANE'S AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING, Inc.

"We do our best to give our customers quality service for a honest price. All of our trucks have NATE certified technicians with a good selection of parts for most Air Conditioning & Heating needs. We [Contractors] do not have the purchasing power like a Big Box store. Our prices are comparable with other HVAC contractors in our area."
