The company listened to our ideas and drew up plans that captured our interest.  They talked us through every step of the process and answered all of our questions with patience.  When the ideal project was a little more than we expected, they helped us find ways to bring the project back into budget without huge compromises.  They were knowledgeable, friendly, and up front about all costs.  The worked quickly and cleanup everything.  They are a full service shop and we are so pleased with our new backyard.

I actually was very excited in getting a bid from them as I searched for a landscaper/design for backyard. I had heard so many good things about them. I researched their site extensively and was excited to see their galleries. My bubble burst the day I was told they could not schedule me an appt due to my budget of 20 - 25k being too low for their service. I was soo disappointed. .. I couldn't even get an appt. I do want to say one thing...I did appreciate their honesty about my budget. They did give me other referrals. I only wished they would've stated in their advertising or website..that they will not take you if your budget is not over a certain amount ...it would have saved me disappointment and " bubble bursting". I did find another company who is very reputable and professional and has worked with my budget. They even offered me financing to allow me to increase my budget to include extra beautification in the design. I always says things happen for reasons I always ,and I would not have found this other company if that was door had not been closed...thank God for opening this window.

I just got on Angie's List so I will try to jog my memory about this - 26+ years ago work. Actually, a lot of the plants are still doing OK believe it or not. The boulders and the rock work were done very nicely at the time and of course still look pretty good now; I recall more boulders being put in than originally talked about. really improved everything and I have been happy over the years it was done right the first time. Who wants to fix a giant boulder problem? The irrigation has lasted well through the years. We have had to replace the control box and the occasional pipe, etc, but the layout and execution was very sound. All in all, my property still looks great after a quarter of a century, if I do say so myself. We even got an award from the city of Sierra M**** right after it was done for beautifying the city.

This provider does a lousy job of responding to requests.  They have the nerve to respond to my request that I submitted 2 months ago.  They don't even pick up their phones to answer calls.  After not even seeing my property, Mark just assumed my project was too small for him.  To me its an indication that it was going to be a bad experience.  They treat potential customers poorly, I can't imagine how they treat other customers.
Response from Garden View Landscaping, Nursery & Pools

"He is right it did take me too long to respond. Though it was exactly 21 days not 2 months. I was on vacation and the email from Angie's list was found in my junk mail. We have a full office staff and a receptionist so I do not know why he could not get to through to us by phone. I apologized profusely for any inconvenience we caused him, I asked if there was anything I could do and even offered plants from our nursery for free. In regards to assuming the job was too small; he stated he wanted a lawn put in, I stated that might be smaller than what we normally do but that I had several qualified contractors that are very happy doing small jobs that I would be happy to refer to him if he wanted. I do agree with him that this would probably have been a bad experience for all involved. I hope he got his project done and it went smoothly."

Working with Garden View was an extremely satisfying process.  We knew the features that we wanted but not exactly what we wanted the pool to look like, so we gave our thoughts to Mark, the owner, and our project manager Richard during the design phase, and they came up with a design that was beautiful and made the most of our oddly-shaped backyard (basically a large flat triangle next to a slope).  Once we engaged their services and started working out the budget they worked easily with us, first by providing us with a design that gave us all the things we asked for - and then, because we realized it was way out of our budget range, adjusting the design to fit our budget limit.  Because of when we started the project, delays in the permitting put us at a finish date of August.  We told Garden View that we really wanted to have the pool done before the end of the summer and didn't want the schedule to slip. They met the dates as quickly as possible - some days trucks and materials didn't come that were expected, but overall we didn't lose more than a week or so off the schedule and we had the pool a couple weeks before school started. (Since this is LA, we had a couple months of use before it got too cold to swim).  We did frequently check in with Richard about the schedule and about questions that we had; Richard was great about responding with answers in a timely manner, and with cost information if we were requesting changes or asking about the budget.
We LOVE the pool.  The multiple features of the pool (slide, 2 baja shelves, 8' deep end, shallow end) mean that many people can be in it at the same time doing lots of different things.  The slide is great - a stone staircase leads to its top and the bottom of the slide is raised above the pool by a foot plus, so any ride down the slide results in a nice plunge. Mark and the team at Garden View take a lot of pride in the work that they do and it shows in the final result.  You can definitely get a basic pool for less money than we paid Garden View, but I think our final result actually looks more expensive than it was.

I have just got in a good word for Garden View Landscaping. They did some fencing work for me. The owners are friends of ours. I actually knew them. I kind of had in mind of what I wanted. They stayed within the budget that I had. They cleaned up the messes. I think their price was reasonable. I would give them 'A's on everything.

I think that the plans and the appearance of the finished garden were very good and I would rate this aspect as an A. However, with time, some negatives did become apparent. Most concerning were the following:
1. Within the first year the lighting fixtures corroded and, in fact, completely disintegrated. These were replaced at no cost by Garden View.
2. The wiring for the lights was mostly laid only 1-2 inches below the surface and the sprinkler pipes were not much deeper. The result was that when I was digging in the garden I would usually hit one or the other. I spent a fair amount of time making repairs.
3. After about 4 years the pond started leaking and could not be repaired so I had it removed and replaced by a larger pond.
4. The wooden supports for the pergola were not installed properly and had earth contact. After a few years they developed dry rot and termites necessitating expensive repairs.
The conclusion that I would draw from this is that the design and planning of the garden and the hardscape were good but the crew that actually did the rest of the work was poor (at least in my case). Paying as much as I did, I would expect much better work.
Response from Garden View Landscaping, Nursery & Pools

"This project was done over 10.5 years ago. I wish the owner would have come to us with the problems and we would have resolved them just like we did when the lights corroded. Even so if there is anything we can do to help make things right for you at this point please let us know. I do not know how to get a hold of you at this point. These are very unusual complaints for us and after 35 years of working in the "spirit of constant improvement" I can not understand how this could have happened. Though not part of our procedures back then we now have a inspection check off system for each phase of the project with each phase having at least 25 items that needs to be checked off by the project Foreman and the project designer/manager. Though most of the work is done in-house If any subcontractor works on the project they need to have the check off list signed off by them and the designer/project manager before being paid. Back then I personally checked every job (and I am still very active in checking our projects) so this is a failure that I must personally accept responsibility for and make sure that it never happens again."

Garden View handles all our outdoor projects because Mark is really particular about each one.  We have spent many hours tweaking a design on site to get all the elements just exactly right.  I refer Mark to real estate and design clients all the time.  And Garden View maintains our yard; it's a great time saver to have all the pieces "in house".

I could not be happier with their work.  It is now my favorite part of the home.  I am really pleased with their service. They always work so hard and are on time.  They even cover my car while blowing leaves or doing other yard maintenance. They have also chased after my dogs when they ran away.  They really go above and beyond their call of duty.  I feel safe going on vacation for two weeks, always knowing nothing bad is going to happen.  They are very trustworthy and personable.  I cannot say enough good things about them.  I feel lucky and happy to have them working on my yard.  I feel I have a good relationship with the owner and he always comes to check on the work.  They are very responsive from top to bottom.

Very thorough start to finish. Garden View still maintains its work. They did a major fountain/pond renovation and repair years after it was built. It was redesigned to correct some issues.

It turned out okay. There was a little disagreement near the end of the project but is okay.
Response from Garden View Landscaping, Nursery & Pools

"I am sorry our client is not thoroughly happy with their project and actually there really wasn't a dispute. The issue arose at least a year or maybe two after the project was finished. It wasn't really a dispute because we were never given an opportunity to respond or resolve the issue. It was taken care of by the client before they brought it to our attention. The issue was that we raised the soil level 18" against an existing property line wall. We had provided a bid on the original proposal to put in another wall next to the existing wall. This extra wall seemed redundant to us and to our client as we were not putting much weight against the existing wall. In a mutual decision by our client and us we decided not to put in the wall if the city did not require it and use the investment in other places. We passed all city inspections and were under the impression our client was completely satisfied with their finished project. On a later project at the residence that did not include us the city inspector went into the back yard and asked why there was not another wall against the existing wall. The client did not contact us and hired the contractor that was working on the pool house to do the wall, his price was over double our original estimate for this wall. These are very nice and reasonable people who made a good sized investment. Our clients satisfaction is our utmost goal so we are dismayed that they are not completely happy. I don't know what we would have done different in this case. I would have hated to charge them for an unnecessary wall just in case."

They did a beautiful job. They were really patient throughout the process. They were especially patient when we were trying to determine our price of the work.  He really hung in there and worked the numbers for a couple of months.  I really appreciated that.

They do a landscape service and it's like a nursery. You can go and buy plants from them. I didn't use any of their professional services. They offer good customer service and knowledgeable service over there. Their prices are better than the home improvement store's nursery. They had their plants arranged for easy selection and you could get the information about what the plant is and whether it is drought collard or whatever else you would need for your own landscaping. Nothing really stood out about their knowledge or professionalism.

They were very helpful. They were pretty good but their price did not fit in my budget. Their estimate was for $30,000. I had a budget of $20,000. If they had told me earlier, when I called them, that they don’t do small jobs, I would not have wasted my time. They would not have to come to my house and spend an hour. I am looking for low cost solutions and I am not their customer. I will not use them in the future.
Response from Garden View Landscaping, Nursery & Pools

"I usually let people know what are minimums are. I’m sorry if I was not clear enough in this instance. Many people have no idea of what the work they are looking for actually will cost to have a quality job done. Our company provides complete outdoor construction services all the way from Design, Construction to Maintenance. Usually when a potential client asks for a specific service they are pleased that we can give them a complete, all encompassing, coordinated, cost effective project. I hope I was able to be of some service to the client by giving him insight on what the potential was for big picture of his project, other possibilities and design concept thoughts."

Several of our HOA Board members made a trip to this nursery (it was pretty close by) to pick out some trees. They were VERY helpful, even their website gave us information to bring with us (photos, etc.). We were able to pick out 5 new trees as well as a couple of plants and about 12 bags of compost. They delivered them in a timely manner. We elected to also have them plant the trees, but I can't remember the price we paid (it was reasonable, we had checked with other landscapers regarding their prices as well).
