"He is right it did take me too long to respond. Though it was exactly 21 days not 2 months. I was on vacation and the email from Angie's list was found in my junk mail. We have a full office staff and a receptionist so I do not know why he could not get to through to us by phone. I apologized profusely for any inconvenience we caused him, I asked if there was anything I could do and even offered plants from our nursery for free. In regards to assuming the job was too small; he stated he wanted a lawn put in, I stated that might be smaller than what we normally do but that I had several qualified contractors that are very happy doing small jobs that I would be happy to refer to him if he wanted. I do agree with him that this would probably have been a bad experience for all involved. I hope he got his project done and it went smoothly."
We LOVE the pool. The multiple features of the pool (slide, 2 baja shelves, 8' deep end, shallow end) mean that many people can be in it at the same time doing lots of different things. The slide is great - a stone staircase leads to its top and the bottom of the slide is raised above the pool by a foot plus, so any ride down the slide results in a nice plunge. Mark and the team at Garden View take a lot of pride in the work that they do and it shows in the final result. You can definitely get a basic pool for less money than we paid Garden View, but I think our final result actually looks more expensive than it was.
1. Within the first year the lighting fixtures corroded and, in fact, completely disintegrated. These were replaced at no cost by Garden View.
2. The wiring for the lights was mostly laid only 1-2 inches below the surface and the sprinkler pipes were not much deeper. The result was that when I was digging in the garden I would usually hit one or the other. I spent a fair amount of time making repairs.
3. After about 4 years the pond started leaking and could not be repaired so I had it removed and replaced by a larger pond.
4. The wooden supports for the pergola were not installed properly and had earth contact. After a few years they developed dry rot and termites necessitating expensive repairs.
The conclusion that I would draw from this is that the design and planning of the garden and the hardscape were good but the crew that actually did the rest of the work was poor (at least in my case). Paying as much as I did, I would expect much better work.
"This project was done over 10.5 years ago. I wish the owner would have come to us with the problems and we would have resolved them just like we did when the lights corroded. Even so if there is anything we can do to help make things right for you at this point please let us know. I do not know how to get a hold of you at this point. These are very unusual complaints for us and after 35 years of working in the "spirit of constant improvement" I can not understand how this could have happened. Though not part of our procedures back then we now have a inspection check off system for each phase of the project with each phase having at least 25 items that needs to be checked off by the project Foreman and the project designer/manager. Though most of the work is done in-house If any subcontractor works on the project they need to have the check off list signed off by them and the designer/project manager before being paid. Back then I personally checked every job (and I am still very active in checking our projects) so this is a failure that I must personally accept responsibility for and make sure that it never happens again."
"I am sorry our client is not thoroughly happy with their project and actually there really wasn't a dispute. The issue arose at least a year or maybe two after the project was finished. It wasn't really a dispute because we were never given an opportunity to respond or resolve the issue. It was taken care of by the client before they brought it to our attention. The issue was that we raised the soil level 18" against an existing property line wall. We had provided a bid on the original proposal to put in another wall next to the existing wall. This extra wall seemed redundant to us and to our client as we were not putting much weight against the existing wall. In a mutual decision by our client and us we decided not to put in the wall if the city did not require it and use the investment in other places. We passed all city inspections and were under the impression our client was completely satisfied with their finished project. On a later project at the residence that did not include us the city inspector went into the back yard and asked why there was not another wall against the existing wall. The client did not contact us and hired the contractor that was working on the pool house to do the wall, his price was over double our original estimate for this wall. These are very nice and reasonable people who made a good sized investment. Our clients satisfaction is our utmost goal so we are dismayed that they are not completely happy. I don't know what we would have done different in this case. I would have hated to charge them for an unnecessary wall just in case."
And all the plants look great.
"I usually let people know what are minimums are. I’m sorry if I was not clear enough in this instance. Many people have no idea of what the work they are looking for actually will cost to have a quality job done. Our company provides complete outdoor construction services all the way from Design, Construction to Maintenance. Usually when a potential client asks for a specific service they are pleased that we can give them a complete, all encompassing, coordinated, cost effective project. I hope I was able to be of some service to the client by giving him insight on what the potential was for big picture of his project, other possibilities and design concept thoughts."
