Music Instruction
The Riekes Center is an interesting place. It has music instruction (rock, hip hop, etc), a gym with fitness trainers, outdoor activity classes (surfing, backpacking), and digital video classes. It's a mix of things teenagers like. My son has been taking a jam class there for about a year and bass lessons for several months. The bass teacher, Nick Machado, is outstanding. The jam class is a format that puts a small group of kids (who may not already know each other) into a band. They meet once a week at the center to play and then they perform occasionally at concerts at the center. The center is sometimes a little disorganized about parent communication, but from the kids' point of view, it's a huge success.
