More amazing, however, was when another contractor (whom we have used before and trust) disputed that the work had been done up to standards, Dan agreed to meet with that contractor and resolve any outstanding issues. He showed up with two of his workers ready to perform any necessary work. Our other contractor and he met together and, without any bruised egos, Dan acknowledged that, due to a possible misunderstanding, some more work needed to be re-done. As it turned out, our other contractor also had misunderstood part of what McHale's had originally taken on to do. Everything worked out fine! Dan said that his philosophy is "to kill with kindness." And I think that's what it's like doing business with him and McHale's. I would highly recommend his company - and him! - to anybody who needs the kind of services they perform.
The first impression provided by the gentleman who came to quote the job was excellent. He really took his time and performed a thorough inspection so that he could give me useful advice in what services I needed. Other contractors I interviewed were not as thorough and, as such, it seemed to me that their work might reflect that. Because of this first impression, and that their price was in line with other contractors, I went with McHale's.
They spent one day removing all the insulation from the two attics at my house. I inspected the work that night and found their work to be very complete and thorough, which is great because rats lived in my house many years ago and I wanted all that contamination removed. The next day they came and installed the new insulation. I asked for some additional insulation along one wall that seems to get hot during the summer. They applied an additional complete layer of insulation along with wall with straps to hold it in place. They even insulated the access door. Really a top job in my opinion.
I highly recommend using McHale's for your insulation jobs.
The process took two half days - one day to remove the old insulation and one day to seal air penetrations and install new insulation. The company arrived on time both days. Insulation removal is a messy process, but the company sealed off the area so that there was no contamination. At the end of day one, I went up into the attic and inspected my wiring to make sure that there were no issues. I did have a problem with a ceiling light fixture that was not adequately secured, but McHale worked with me to seal and secure the fixture. On day 2, the installers sealed all air penetrations and blew in new insulation. The also added fiberglass batts on my uninsulated kneewall. As a bonus, they added an extra layer of insulation on the attic access door. The added insulation looked very uniform to me. The city building inspector also commended the company for doing an excellent job.
The city required a building permit for replacing attic insulation. McHale took care of all the details (except the permit fee, which I paid) and were present during the final inspection.
I chose McHale's Environmental Insulation because the estimator, Greg Blanc spent the time answering my questions and I really appreciated that. He was happy to explain things, and even suggested other ways to cool down the house. He was friendly and professional. I actually had 3 top rated companies from Angie's list give me estimates.1 of them never got back to me, but the other 2 were just about same price.
Bottom line is they were professional; they said what they were going to do, and then they did what they said. All for a good price. My wife and I are very happy with our choice!!
After the job was completed, I noticed a couple of minor things. A few of my recessed lights were out - probably from all the moving around above. I replaced the bulbs, but noticed that one of the lights would go out after 10 minutes or so, then turn on again. I also went into the attic to take a closer look and noticed an unprotected wall (not sure if it's called the ridge wall). It's basically just framing with tar paper where the roof peak meets - no insulation. I voiced my concerns to the salesperson who came out to re-inspect. He said that he would have to check with the guys about the lighting, then get back to me. As for the un-insulated wall, he dismissed it and said don't worry about it, that it wouldn't make a difference. I did expect a call back, but 3 weeks later, still had not. I called the office to let them know that I was expecting a follow-up from the sales guy, but had not received one get. I was called back immediately by the owner, Tom.
I explained the light issue and the exposed wall in the attic. Tom immediately offered to have his guys come out, fix the light and install Radiant Barrier on the unprotected wall. This also meant that they would also have to re-insulate the disturbed areas.
I am profoundly appreciative for the level of service I received. And for the owner to respond in the manner that he did, proves that McHale's is not "just" another insulation company. They truly stand behind their service.
Thank you Tom for standing behind your work.
For those of you who are reading reviews before considering which company to go with, I can't say enough good things about McHale's and their level of service.
Thank you McHale's Insulation for doing such a great job!
