The next day, at 6:29pm, Miguel texted me to confirm our appointment for Saturday morning at 8:00am, and to please reply. I did, and he thanked me.
Saturday morning, at 7:57am, Miguel texted me, "Good morning, I'm on Crenshaw and PCH." He informed me that he was not far from my home.
I was shocked and very pleased at all the communication! This was a first, in all my dealings plumbers, contractor, etc.
Miguel and his son, Miguel Jr, arrived promptly and I greeted them at the door. Father and son were both polite and very friendly. Jr. is still training with his father, but is close to being finished. They started in the kitchen with fan 1L
Fan 1L. The switch I installed seemed to work correctly (to my surprise)- the light even turned on, which it never did before they arrived! Sr immediately knew that because the fan was connected to a dimmer, that was the probable cause of the problems. He knew you can't use a dimmer with this fan because it had a remote control. I gave him the remote, and it did not work. They checked the wiring of the switch, then checked the wiring of the fan. Sure enough, the fan and light control (for the remote) in the fan was overheating, and had a telltale burn mark- and Sr pointed out that this was a fire hazard. He said the next problem was that the fan could have overheated as well, and we would need a whole new fan. Luckily, after removing the fan and light control for the remote, the fan worked! We bought the large fans at Costco at a good price, but never needed the remote control, so this was no loss.
Fans 2L and 3S- both have caused shocks. Miguel explained that since there is carpet, the shocks were due to static electricity. I told my wife to stop dragging her feet, haha. Sr examined all of the wiring of both wall switches and found nothing wrong.
Fan 4S- both guys checked the wiring of the switch and the wiring to the fan. Everything checked out. Sr explained that if the light goes out again, it would be a defective fan, still under warranty, and that the company should replace the whole unit. He offered to email a letter explaining what he did, in case Hunter needed any further explanation from me.
I was extremely happy and impressed with the work of father and son. Now, my wife mentioned that the garbage disposal switch was not working properly. Sr looked and said that the two outlets, on both sides of the sink, were not "up to code" because they were not GFI outlets. Sr mentioned prices for two GFI outlets and two switches- for the garbage disposal and the light. He apologized that if I wanted the Devora switches (to match the type used for the fan), they woud be more expensive, versus the conventional two switches already there- only $3 more each! I told him no problem, let's just do it!
All of the above work was done within 75 minutes or so. Sr and Jr are both polite, friendly, clean workers. Both are perfectionists- they make sure the screw heads on the cover plates are all vertical!!! I never saw such attention to detail before. And it looks better this way as well!
Price- Saturday service call $160.
Parts- $50.
Labor 1 hour- $65.
Total $275.
I am so glad I called Miguel. This is a family-owned business, with five family members who are the electricians. Three work on commercial jobs, while Sr and Jr handle the house calls. I will give them all my future business, and happily recommend them to friends.
- The electrician ( Miguel) located and corrected numerous wiring problems created by the age some of the wiring and by poor electrical work done when preparing the house for sale. He arrived on time and worked within the time frames discussed beforehand. We discussed the price beforehand and nothing changed except that Miguel was able to save us some money in a related purchase of lighting.
While it is not a real criteria for hiring an electrician , we really liked the friendly, approachable nature that Miguel and his son possess. Both were forthcoming and informative when queried about ongoing work.
We plan to use Volt Electric for upcoming work on our garage.
They did an excellent job.
