As part of his inspection he looked into the attic and commented on extensive evidence of rats - droppings, stains, and burrows in the insulation. I had been told of the problem with the insulation by two other professionals already so I was not surprised. In fact I had made a tentative appointment with another company to have the insulation removed. Mario informed me that his company also was able to remove insulation. The price he gave for the work was a little less than the other company and I was impressed with his careful termite exam and offer to have follow up visits to check after the work was completed so I signed a contract with him for both termite treatment and attic clean out.
Unfortunately the process of attic clean out did not go well. We were told that it would take about a day and that the large gas operated vacuum used would be quite noisy so this was to be expected. Mario came with two young men who, it turned out, had very little experience with this work. The attic space was very limited and difficult to get about in, the temperatures outside were over 100 and in the attic probably over 120 ( that's as high as my thermometer goes). For health and safety the workers had to wear coveralls and masks. They could only remain in the attic for short periods of time. The bags they used broke on more than one occasion. They worked all one day into the evening and all the next day and then told us they were finished. Mario did not return to inspect the work. However we looked up there a couple of days later and were disappointed to see that there was still a lot of insulation present and multiple rat droppings on the floor. We called Tamler back ( I had already paid for the work). Mario agreed to send out a more experienced crew to finish the job. A few days later a second crew came out and spent two more days on the work. It wasn't perfect but we told them at this point that we'd accept the results not wanting to have someone injured by heat exhaustion. In addition the noise of the machines made it difficult to spend time in the house during the time they were working for the 4 days they were here.
Tamler termite did not ask for any additional payment ( Mario did ask if I would be willing to pay another $150 for some extra bags on the first effort which I agreed). Mario told me that he had not realized how much insulation was in the attic - a double layer in some areas. I suspect that the company may have lost money on this contract since 4 days work by several men were required instead of the estimated one day.
I think the basic problem was that they did not have the experience to realize what would be required for the job and did not have workers expert at carrying out the work. ( Incidentally I noted that the large gas operated vacuum was rented, they had no good way to get it on and off the truck ( it took 3 men to lift), and on one day they arrived without a suitable ladder)
On the positive side they were very responsive to returning repeatedly to try to complete the job when we requested and they stuck to the amount in the original estimate ( with one minor exception).
Incidentally the termite treatment was done smoothly and I hope effectively. All holes were sealed up.
I would recommend that the company be used for termites but that you look for a different company to do attic insulation removal, probably a company that does that as its primary focus.
