This was my 4th or 5th job with Steve Hipsman, a master craftsman who has upholstered just about all of my furniture over the years. He must have broken a record for turnaround time on this one. I emailed the cushion measurements to him on a Friday, and he delivered new down envelopes on the following Wednesday. As usual, they were perfect.

WONDERFUL. Steve arrived exactly when he said he would to give me a quote (which was really reasonable). I visited his shop where he has literally thousands of fabrics to choose from (he gave me the option of supplying my own fabric, which I did because I found a color I loved elsewhere). He delivered the first 4 on Friday (I had him do 4 at a time so we would have somewhere to sit) and they're beautiful. The workmanship is great, they're all nice and tight, and it only took a week! He has the 2nd batch now, and I will likely have him do the sofa and an easy chair in our bedroom soon as well. Definitely recommend him -- and he's close by here in West L.A.!

Velvet is a fabric with a nap. I was extremely diasppointed with the placement of the fabric on the sofa arms. The nap on the right arm is opposite to the nap on the left arm. That layout choice creates the impression that the arms are upholstered in different colors. I was told by Roman Upholstery that it is an industry-standard to upholster the sofa arms with the nap running in opposite directions. I do not have the training and education officially to refute this claim, and I do not have the interest to research the issue any further. Buyer beware: nearly $3500 spent for a product that is visually out of sync in my home. Anyone with common sense would upholster the sofa arms with the nap running in the same direction. Roman Upholstery disagrees. Update, 4/15/19: This is a follow-up review to the comments left by the owner of Roman Upholstery to my initial review. He is misleading when he states that the nap of the velvet placed on my sofa is all running in the same direction: his argument is that the nap is supposed to run in a circle around the sofa, creating the mismatched arms and sides. I have now educated myself as to how a sofa should be upholstered in velvet (given the nap), and the the work done by Roman was incorrectly or poorly done. The pieces for the arms and sides where not correctly cut. It's just shoddy work all the way around. I didn't bother to mention in my first review that the re-upholstered sofa was merely draped with a loose sheet of plastic when delivered: wood was nicked on one of the legs and dents created in a section of the fabric that wasn't well protected by the loose plastic. I was promised a sample of the fabric before it would be ordered: that never happened. When my sofa was picked up, I was told that the owner forgot the swatch and would drop it by the next day: that never happened.
Response from Roman Upholstery
"After responding to my client's request for an on site inspect for the issue described within 24 hours of her request, the issue of how the velvet was applied on the sofa, was, as a subscriber to Angie's List have read, had left the customer unsatisfied. The issue at hand was that the client felt that the velvet used on the sofa was "running in opposite directions". Whenever we are asked to use a material ( velvet, chenille, mohair, etc.) with a nap or a direction, we are very mindful as to how the fabric should be applied to each specific piece. In this case the velvet used was applied onto the sofa with the nap running in the same direction. The issue at hand was that on the one arm section, as it appeared in the home, read as a darker in appearance to the other arm. That is the nature of a fabric with a nap or direction. It can read, depending how the light may hit the piece as a lighter or darker panel. Throughout this transaction, we were consistently punctual, responsive, and professional. As far as the quality and price, the client was fully aware as to the cost of this project. The quality is something that after the client stating many times that "she is not an upholsterer", but she was qualified enough to know how to apply fabric onto an upholstered sofa, left me a little frustrated."

Quality excellent. Very willing to work on a short deadline we needed to turn job around quickly (chair is used to help with certain health-related issues). Steve was involved each step and very easy to work with. Shop is clean and professional. Price was slightly higher than two other quotes but still reasonable and worth every penny, glad we did not go with the lowest bidder (their shop was a mess).

In response to reviews on Angie's list for upholstery repair near me, I called Roman Upholstery to ask if they would be willing to repair a single couch cushion that had come apart at the seam. Steven, the owner of this family business, kindly agreed and I quickly stopped by before he had a chance to change his mind (as skilled upholstery businesses. in my experience, rarely are willing to interrupt their work flow for such a small repair.) The cushion was repaired beautifully and in about 5 minutes. I could not be more impressed. They will be reupholstering a large sectional for me some time soon.

I met the wonderful people at this workshop because my mother's interior designer used Roman Upholstery in our family home, and that was many years ago when Art was running the show. Art, his son, Steve and this workroom have done work for me, and for my design clients for about 25 years and they are Top Notch! Steve is carrying on the family business since Art passed away and doing so with the great skills he learned under his dad's tutelage. Excellent customer service and great at helping to resolve any issues that may arise! They take great pride in their work & in making their clients very pleased! I could go on and on. The best!

Could not have been more pleased with the experience. Steven was as responsive and as helpful as we could have hoped. We had a large sofa/sectional, a couch attached to a chaise that was over 15 years old and very well used. Cushions/Pillows were shot. A lot of the fabric was fraying. We had basically decided to replace. It was a well made, quality piece of furniture with an original cost that was pretty expensive. I sent Steven pictures, visited his office to meet and discuss it with him. He gave me a price for an entire reupholstering job. We arranged for him to visit with fabric samples - he brought books and books and books; too many choices to consider - and he helped us enormously narrow down the many options available to us. He provided us with a timeline as to how long the work would take him. We arranged a start date. He was prompt in picking the piece up and taking to his workroom and he delivered exactly as promised. This wasn't an inexpensive job but we now have an entirely new unit at approximately half of what we originally paid - a piece that we hope to get another 15 years out of. The upholstery work is top rate. Seat cushions were entirely replaced. Back pillows (10) were reupholstered and restuffed with new down. All the small details look perfect. Honestly, I couldn't say enough nice things about the experience. First class work, easy interaction and totally professional. As positive an experience as we could have wanted.

Exceptional craftsmanship produced beautiful results.  Steve provided written quotes for the work and delivered re-upholstered furniture per bid and on time.  Highly knowledgeable and polite.  I am very pleased with results and recommend Steve and Roman Upholstery if you want quality and are willing to pay for it.

Steve first asked for a photograph of the sofa.  After that he provided three separate quotes, depending on what we decided we wanted to do to fix our problem.  He then picked up the cushions and pillows (exactly as scheduled) and a little over a week later returned them.  The work done was exactly what we wanted.   That alone deserves an "A" rating, but it was what happened next that really impressed us.   Steve inadvertently overcharged us, but as soon as I pointed it out, he agreed immediately to refund a portion of the price which he did.   I believe that this is the true test of a good vendor.  How they respond when there's a problem, and, in this case, Steve got an "A" for customer service.

Steve and his staff at Roman Upholstery did a fantastic job re-upholstering our favorite leather chair. We're tremendously pleased with the work, and we recommend them enthusiastically. Initially, we had taken the chair to another upholstery shop that had done a terrible job. We knew we needed a better quality upholstery shop to get the result we wanted, so we took the chair to Roman and asked them to redo it. The Roman crew used our photos of the original chair and did a great job salvaging it and making it look and feel like it did when it was new. Next time, we'll go to directly to Roman!

Response from Roman Upholstery
"We follow our reviews very closely. Had there been any quality issues raised by our client with our finished product we would have addressed them at no cost, to her satisfaction. At the time of delivery, to the best of our knowledge, all concerns had been addressed, and the client was satisfied. However, if there are any issues still remaining, we would be very happy to accommodate.our client. Thank you, Steve @ Roman."

They are excellent. They are true craftsmen. This is the set that I wanted. It was a size that I wanted. They helped me choose the leather and they did a good job. The price was fair because of the quality of the materials that they used. They were professional and they delivered when they said they were going to deliver. They did a great job. They're superior worksmen. It was much more important to me to have a superior product than it was to have a cheap product. I wouldn't hesitate. I would absolutely use them in the future.

Once I decided on fabric for each chair, I emailed Steve Hipsman, the owner, with pictures and dimensions. He let me know exactly how much fabric I needed to order and gave me a quote for reupholstering each chair. After the fabric arrived, I made an appointment for Steve to come to my home and pick up the fabrics and chairs (included in the quote). Steve was friendly, prompt and professional. We discussed the work that was to be done and he made some great suggestions for updating the style of the upholstery (i.e. changing the way the skirt fell, changing button detail, etc.). Several weeks later, Steve delivered the completed chairs back to me. The quality of his work is excellent. The cost was not inexpensive, but the chairs look fantastic and will last for another 30 years. Without my asking, Steve even made some extra covered buttons for one of the cushions in case of emergency. I highly recommend Roman Upholstery and will use them in the future.

Roman Upholstery did a spectacular job reupholstering a very old and very ruined antique chair - pickup and delivery were exactly on time and the workmanship is stellar.  I immediately gave him another piece to do -- I could not recommend this gentleman or his company more highly.
