In early January, garage door began stuttering on closure: it would stop and then fully open, as if it had detected an obstruction.  I called 2 shops for service.  The fist, LA Overhead Door on Pico Blvd. sent the owner, Sam Ross, and without even testing, said the motor and 2 springs needed replacing for $700+.  (There is only 1 spring, but he said it needed 2.)  At least he didn't charge me for the estimate.   I said no thanks and called Prestige.

Prestige came and said it was the sensors not being firmly attached, and when the frame vibrated it set off the obstruction-detected warming and reversed the door.  Joe Columbia and Navid Rad tested it several times and determined that the frame and sensor securing bolts had worked loose over time and were causing the problem.  (One bolt was missing entirely.)  He tightened everything and that fixed it.  (No repeat of problem in the 2 months since.)

We also talked about the springs.  Navid said he'd get back to me.  We had to wait for a new spring.  He said the door was made for only 1 spring; it's not possible to install 2.  He got a new spring and replaced it a week after fixing the stutter.  It's been working flawlessly.  The spring didn't show any obvious signs of aging, but Navid and Joe said they have a working life of 7-9 years, and ours was already 10.  So I decided to replace it rather than have the door freeze shut or open when the spring failed and have to call for emergency service.  I'm glad I did.

It was a fair price for the work.  Navid and Joe are all business but seem like straight shooters, and I'll surely call them again if there's a need and recommend them to all my friends and family.  They are very competent and fair and zero BS.

I emailed them to arrange for a tune up on the two doors under an Angie's List special price. I got an email back within 24 hours. During a phone call the same day, we set up a time for the following day. Two workmen arrived on time. The doors had not had professional service since they were installed in 1998 (16 years). I had read from other reviews that roller springs often need replacement after ten years,so I was not surprised when I was told the double door did need a new spring. Also, the quoted price was in line with what I had read. All the work was done in about half an hour. The doors now work smoothly and quietly. I mentioned I had a remote control that had stopped. working. The lead man immediately replaced the battery, and the remote works. A good experience all around.
