Overall the project went exceedingly well despite the demolition uncovering multiple problems (what a surprise!!). These  consisted, mainly, but not limited to, termite and water damage plus instances of improper structural support.
The structural issues were:
1. improper support of the house roof by what was the original Mansard siding frame
2. insufficient support of the balcony overhang
3. incorrect slope of balcony deck.
 All of these problems were effectively dealt with by our contractor. He was instrumental in resolving all the structural issues. The roof support  required a total reframing of three sides of the residence's second storey. The second issue required the replacement of an existing wooden post and beam with ones of greater load bearing capability.The last problem required a complete replacement of the balcony joists in order to straighten out what was a "bow" in the balconies front edge, replacing damaged lumber and constructing a deck base with the correct slope front to back and side to side for proper drainage. Although the cost escalated from the original estimate, due to the problems mentioned above the contractor kept me fully aware of the changes and their associated rationale.
The contractor was a highly capable craftsman, easy to get along with, and was on the job almost every day. He kept me fully aware of progress, current and planned, on a daily basis. Also the subcontractors he employed were well chosen, competent and responsive.
