We looked at many big companies like American Solar, SolarCity, etc and evaluated each. But most of them tried to pressure us into leasing which we absolutely were against (I could also elaborate on this if you want) and to cover our entire tile roof with solar panels. We have a '20s Spanish home with a beautiful tile roof and doing that would be a serious shame. When we told many of these companies what our needs are (to buy a system and have it hidden on certain parts of our roof that are flat and more appropriate) they told us they weren't interested and tried to "educate" us that we wouldn't be able to harness enough electricity to make a difference unless we covered our roof with panels.
Moore solar came and did a very thorough evaluation and came up with several different proposals. We had to move our electrical line over, upgrade our breaker panel and do some trenching from the garage where we wanted panels put. All of this requires more permitting and careful work. Moore didn't flinch and were very good working with Permit Center. They were meticulous and recommended the right coverage in the right places with the proper strength panel, and came up with a detailed report of when we'd breakeven and what to expect throughout the year. We had micro-inverters on each panel and each connect to Enphase to let us know at any moment and historically how our panels are performing. Moore went above and beyond for us...and the best part, we are actually generating more electricity than predicted (our system was designed to generate 100% of our electrical use) and are being paid to offset the other utilities. Suffice it to say we are extremely happy with our solar and with Moore.
A couple more details, we had 24 x 300 kilowatt LG panels put on and they generate an average of 35-40 kilowatt-hours/day in the late spring to summer and 20-30 kilowatt-hours/day in early spring (we just connected it this Feb).
After initial tax and program incentives, our system cost us around $13k (including all the permits, breaker panel upgrade, trenching, micro-inverter setup and Enphase account connectivity plus other incidentals). The break even timeframe at this rate will be 5-6 years. Our system was designed for 100% coverage....but we're finding it's more like 120% in the summer and it was around 105-110% in Feb. Maybe it'll be around 100% in the fall/winter but we'll see. A lot will depend on how much rain El Niño will bring. It is such a great feeling to get our utility bills....what was once a charge for a few hundred $$$...is now a credit to offset the other utilities.
In the office Veronica keeps them well organized and on track. I SO VERY much appreciate the organization. Having recently built my own custom home, I have more stories than I care to mention regarding contractors. Most of it is them simply not showing up on time or at all. Moore Solar and Green Construction is VERY well run and professional.
For the install - Jerry was the lead guy. Jerry is a rarity - in todays world, most contractors just want to get the job done, do perhaps barely more than needed (if you are lucky) and move on. Jerry spent the extra time to ensure the system is operating as I expect. I have an engineering background, so have very high expectations. Often I state my expectations, am open to being educated, come to an agreement and then expect it to be done as discussed. Jerry did just this EVERY time. At times I would suggest what I want and he agreed. Other times he educated me and I agreed. When it came time for the job to be done, it was done as discussed. There were a few things I noted and unknowingly at the time was charge a couple hundred more for, however given their extra time and attention to detail. Well worth it.
If you want a QUALITY job by a well run company who truly takes pride in their work - go with Moore Solar!
We are in the process of getting the solar pool heater from the same provider.
The cost of the system was about $5000 cheaper than any of the other five estimates that we got. Moore does not have a big marketing department so they don't have to overbid systems. The net cost to me after rebates and tax credits was $16000. The net return on the money I invested in the solar system was about 12%.
I am so glad I got the system and Moore did an excellent job in planning and installing it. They also worked well with Edison and got it approved in a timely manner. I would recommend them.
We have questions and called, emailed, texted Veronica and all the girls in the office almost on the daily basis. They are very patient and always tried their best on answering the questions.
These are highly professional people that we recommend for solar installation.
After the rebate and the tax credit, we had received back about $33,000. Based on our electric bills, we're saving around 70% each month or $2,500 a year. At that rate, we'll have made back our investment in four years instead of the predicted five.
I wasn't sure solar power would work for us because our house backs up to a hillside, blocking the sun at some hours, more so in the winter. However, Moore Solar was able to place panels to take the best advantage of what sun we have. And it's working. We are very happy campers.
Today we spoke to them again about working with the solar power wiring in order to install a backup generator. They were, as usual, extremely responsive. We expect the same kind of high level work as the panels because that has always been our experience with them.
Moore Solar has our highest recommendation.
I had to get a new roof and do some tree trimming to get the best results. Jerry and the install crew worked with the Roofing company and installed the Roof Jacks that support the system so that the roofing warranty was not compromised.
Veronica and Julie in the office got all the permits, rebate forms and plan checks through the city. I was going to pay out of pocket for the system but Veronica recommend a special Low interest energy efficient home improvement lender that had a program I qualified for. Once the funding came through the install crew was there the next week and blew the job out in a few days. I couldn't be more happy with them.
As far as Do's and Don't: Don't do a lease system the math doesn't work out in your favor, trust me. I was very happy that I went with a company that did there own estimates and not the monster solar companies that have a teams of sales people knocking out the quotes who have no clue what they are doing. Jerry was the estimator and oversaw the install crew so he knew what he was doing and I trusted his judgement from the start.
I'm now waiting for the DWP inspector to give me the OK to turn it on.
Details: We have a couple of solar panels on the roof that heat hot water and store that water in a tank inside a closet in the house. The tank started leaking a few months ago, and it was determined that the tank could not be repaired; it was taken out of the house hot water circuit and sat idle until recently, when we decided to have it removed from the closet. Moore Solar bid $200 for the work, lower than other bids, which were between $250 and $750 (yes, $750!). Jerry arrived on time, and quickly had the tank disconnected, but the tank wouldn't drain, a common problem due to calcification. This required Jerry, with some help from me, to use a dolly to move the 80 gallon water tank to the front door, where he knocked out the drain valve and allowed the tank to drain outside. The tank weighed perhaps 700 pounds when full of water, and so moving the tank even those 15 feet with a dolly was hard, and dangerous; Jerry didn't blink an eye, and figured out a way to do it. There were additional challenges in capping the pipes, which Jerry figured out quickly; he was concerned thoughout with getting the job done right, not how long it might take. The job took 1.5 hours to do, and Jerry carted off the old tank and removed pipes for disposal. We won't be replacing the tank immediately, but Jerry made sure the piping was left in a condition where a replacement tank could be easily installed if we so choose to in the future. He also offered to do that work, with a bid that was almost half of what another company had bid for the same thing (the same company that bid $750 to remove the water tank). If we choose to replace the tank in the future, we will definitely use Moore Solar.
