found John Mc Gowan's ad on Craigslist. He was selling Italian ceramic tile for a good price. I bought the tile and he suggested I use him to install it into my bathroom. He did his job for the first two days, but when I had to pull him off the job because of personal family emergency, he insisted i pay him the balance I owed him, in full, and in return he promised to come back when my calendar was clear again and finish the job.I owed him $950 balance and he followed me to my bank. I gave him part of the money in cash and part of the money in a check. He cashed the check immediately, and despinte weeks of effort to contact him to finish the work, at least a full eight hours was need to finish the job, as the bath was only about one-thrid covered in tile, he took the money and never returned my calls, texts, voicemails. I even went to his shop on Francisquito Avenue in West Covina. I found him there and he denied that he owed me another days work, claiming that I actually owed him money, which was a fascinating bit of insanity on his part, and refused to finish the job, claiming that all the calls I made to him over a month's time to get him to come and finish the job, was actually harassment.Actually, I was begging him to come back and told him no harm done and I won't hold it against him and that all would be well if he just came and finished the work since he insisted I pay him in full. I showed him photos of the bath to refresh his memory. He refused to pay me my money back and suggested I take him to court. After looking into the laws about collecting money when I would win the case against him, i realized that even though I would clearly win in court, given I had several other workers there who said they would testify and knew John had stolen my money. But it turns out it's almost impossible to collect money from the court-assigned "guilty" party, since it's not up to the court or the police to help me collect.I decided not to go to court but instead join Angie's List so that you will know who you are dealing with if you ever come across an ad to sell tile on any website in the LA area. His name is John Mc Gowan and his phone number is 626-549-5871This happened to me. I hope it doesn't happen to you.
