I do not recommend hiring him, but if you do, make sure you are getting an actual electrician to do the work and not paying for one but getting an unlicensed helper who does the work. Review: Pro's: At first he was great - responsive to inquiry, scheduled appointment, showed up on time, pleasant to deal with and provided an estimate within 24 hours. Con's: Unfortunately, I thought I was hiring him, or at least an electrician. He sent two people instead of coming himself, without telling me that was what would occur. One, Ed, was a helper - not an electrician. The other, Nick, may or may not have been an electrician; I was never told either way, though he acted as if he knew what he was doing when instructing Ed to do the job, so Nick probably is an electrician. However, Nick had the helper Ed do everything, and Ed not only did so incorrectly, he also blew out my living room lights. Summary: Project 1: Install expensive light pendant fixture over kitchen sink. Nick asked me how high to place the pendant and I responded that I wanted it high enough so a 6' man can be under the sink without bumping his head. Results: They did not get this right and my boyfriend keeps hitting his head, even when being careful. Additionally, they did not inset the light fixture at the top, so the casing is outside the ceiling (see pictures), which looks terrible. At first they didn't say anything at all about the way they installed it, despite it obviously looking wrong. Then, when I said that I did not think they way they had it was how it should look, Nick said that was the way it was supposed to go. When I asked again, the following day, Nick then said that it was because the light was a European fixture and Nick would have to custom build a mount. I was fine with that, whatever it took to get it to look right and told him I'd like him to come back after the holidays and do it correctly (at this point I didn't realize the fixture was also hung too low). However, to double check what Nick was saying, I called the manufacturer, in America, who said that the 2" tall circle casing belonged inside the ceiling (with the wide flat circle below it mounted flush against the ceiling) and explained how that would occur and while it might need a longer screw and a larger housing, it did not need a custom mount. (see pictures below to see how they left it, assuring me that that was how it was supposed to look). I texted and called Joel to discuss this and he did not return my text or call. Project 2: Install new dimmer light for lights hanging above the dining room table. Again, the helper did the installation, not an electrician. He installed the dimmer fine, but he blew the other switch for the living room lights, which was housed in the same space as the dining room dimmer switch. Nick said they'd be back the next day to replace it - Friday Dec. 23 - and they were (though that meant I had a dark living/family room all night). They replaced it and the living room lights worked for almost two days. Then mid-day on Christmas, the light switch stopped working again. Luckily my brother was able to come over and take a look and switched the wires and got the lights working for Christmas. On Tuesday the 27th (I did not call on the 26th since that was a holiday for most people), I called and spoke with Lisa in the office and asked that she have Joel call me. I explained about the lights blowing out again on Christmas due to their error and that I wanted someone to come back and make sure it was wired correctly and that they also needed to come back and fix the pendant light installation that was done incorrectly. I did not receive a call back. On Wednesday the 28th the living room lights went out yet again. I called two more times, each time nicely explaining I was sitting in the dark due to their error and asking when they would come back to fix things and never received a return call. All messages I left were friendly. Luckily my neighbor has a friend who is an electrician, and he came over mid-day on the 29th since I wasn't going to go another night without lights, and he fixed the switch and showed me what they did wrong - it was a rookie mistake. My new electrician also discussed how he could install the light pendant properly - with the casing inside the ceiling - without having to build a custom bracket, though he does need a longer screw and possibly a larger casing/housing. Unfortunately it turns out that Nick and Ed threw out my box, instructions and anything else that came with the light - without asking - so I don't know what else might have been in with the light. Lastly, my new electrician provided an estimate for the remaining work I need done outside the house, that Joel had previously bid on, and the new electrician's bid came in at 50% less than Joel's bid. Luckily for me, Joel had not yet deposited the check I paid (which, to add insult to injury, was more than the original estimate). Since he did not return three calls, including urgent calls that I was sitting in the dark due to his helper's error, and because I had to pay someone else to re-do his faulty work, I put a stop payment on the check. I still have not heard back from him. I would not hire him again, obviously. But like I said, if you want to take the risk that he'll behave differently with you and have the job done competently, be sure that he himself comes out and that he doesn't let his helper do the wiring when you're paying for an electrician.

We had to complete electrical work in garage for a permit to sell a home. I called Joel Kelley and we arranged a date to fix problem and he quoted me for time he thought it would take about $600.00 for the work. The electricians arrived and finished the work sooner than they had quoted and they charged me accordingly at 195.00 instead of the 600.00. They were very prompt and polite and I would definitely use this company again.

Everything went perfectly! Joel Kelley responded quickly to my message through Angie's list and got us on the schedule for the following week. Nick and his partner showed up right on time, we did a quick walk through of the issues to fix and they got to work. Everything was fixed within an hour or so and Nick showed me how to set the timer in the future myself. Everything is working great! Highly recommend Joel Kelley Electric. My Boss was so happy she hired them to come to her home for more repairs.

He's great. He didn't try to sell me unnecessary stuff that I didn't need that's what I like about him. He's very professional and that I didn't have to re-wire the whole house and gave me an educational on electrical codes for all the homes.

We called Joel when the electricity in our back house mysteriously stopped working. We were told that same week by another electrician the same thing, but this other company also said we needed to redo all of our wiring in our old house and update it - to the tune of $6,000.00. We asked Joel (who has done many old, old houses including original Greene and Greene houses) and he completely disagreed and reassured us that our home was fine. This was concurred by the inspector who came to check out our fuse box (though he also agreed the fuse box was a fire hazard), so Joel's honesty saved us tons of money and hassle, and the work he did was great. He was on time, friendly, and made us feel like our needs and concerns were his. I'll use him from now on and would happily recommend him to all of my neighbors and friends. Thanks!

They did all the communicating with the city of Pasadena and were prompt for each appointment even when the city missed their twice. The job was done well, neatly and they checked their work to make sure that everything was working in the house. Every time I needed to email or call, I got a prompt response. I would recommend them highly. Joel and Nick did the work and they were very nice and professional.

FINALLY, I'VE FOUND MY ELECTRICIAN! After years of working with several electricians (including a relative), I have found a trusted, experienced, and reliable person who will be my go-to guy when it comes to all things electrical.
I purchased a 1926 home whose electrical could best be described as a mess. My main panel was overloaded by 24 circuits(!), my interior sub-panel was too small; and many of the lines feeding both panels were not installed properly, some to the point of being outright dangerous.
I was daunted by the estimates I had received from other companies to clean-up my main panel, upgrade my interior sub-panel from 100 to 200 amps, and perform a number of other electrical upgrades throughout the house. The range was $4,500 to over $10,000 and the sense I got from pretty much every company that came out was that I was in for a final bill that would significantly exceed the estimate I was given.
And then came Joel. What a breath of fresh air! Along with his technician, Nick, they thoroughly inspected my situation and made recommendations that were consistent with what the other companies said and what I knew needed to be done. They were also the ONLY company that recommended pulling a permit for the work - a good idea to ensure the work being performed is up-to-code, but also necessary if you want to report the upgrades when selling/pricing the house down the road.
While the panel work was being done I wanted everything wired in such a way that I could easily connect a gas powered generator in the future. Joel has experience doing this very thing so we worked together to determine the best placement of breakers and added an exterior outlet that will accommodate the generator once I purchase it.
In addition to the panel work, I also wanted to upgrade my old hard-wired smoke detectors to new models and add units where they were missing, so Joel took care of that for me, too. He was able to purchase new, state-of-the-art combination smoke/carbon monoxide detectors with battery back-ups at a price far less expensive than I could have gotten at a big box retailer; install them; and link them together (required by code). My family now feels much safer every time we look up and see the little green light glowing from each detector.
Lastly, Joel upgraded the connection to my driveway gate. Prior to his intervention, the electrical line feeding power to the gate was 1) run through white PVC not rated for electrical (code violation), 2) used interior Romex (another code violation), and 3) was buried just 4 inches below the surface (yet another code violation). Altogether this made for a very dangerous situation. By the time Joel was finished, we had the proper wiring running through the proper conduit and buried the proper depth. Joel also assisted me in running a length of empty conduit while the trench was exposed for future additions (such as adding a controlled-entry pedestrian gate down the road).
The jobs took several days as I had a LOT to do, but Joel and Nick always arrived on time, cleaned-up after every day, and left the areas looking better than they did before they arrived. Their knowledge and expertise was evident throughout the process and I was left feeling that I not only got a very fair price, but that the work done was even better than what was required.
Overall: very professional; quality materials and workmanship; dependable; trustworthy; and nice people, too!

Joel and his team were extremely informative and showed up exactly when they said they would, and got to work right away. Joel took care of getting all the permits and talked with the city directly when needed. He kept me informed at every step of the way and took the time to make sure I understood my options. I'm extremely happy with the work and would HIGHLY recommend Joel and his team!

While they were here I had something else that needed to be looked at. They charge by the hour so they completed that and did not charge extra. They were real friendly.

That was the second time we used him in our home and we used him at our Tennis Club for some big projects. That is why we asked him to come over here to our house. He is prompt, thorough, careful, professional. My wife tells him that he is expensive but I don't think he's more expensive than any other electrician.

We had a previous electrician install a new dawn to dusk porch light. It was positioned higher than before and too close to the eave, thereby, causing the sensor not to work at all. Later we had a handyman take a look at it and he decided to replace a component (bad idea) from the new fixture and had no success. At this point, I located Joel Kelley, a very personable person. He repositioned the fixture and recommended a better light fixture. It finally worked. Unfortunately, a couple weeks later there was a heavy storm that caused a power surge in the neighborhood. The power surge through the relay sensor off, I called Kelley and he came by fixed without any additional charge.
