I probably called 10 gardeners and actually met/spoke with 5. It came down to Sam and another well-liked gardener who I thought would do the job, but Sam won out.
My last gardener had been doing a mediocre job and was very unresponsive to my requests to fix/add things to the yard. He finally quit, so I had the opportunity to get my yard back up to snuff.
Sam was very knowledgeable, made suggestions on what I could do to get the yard back to health and seemed excited about the job. His team has been working on my yard every week since July of 2014. He's conscientious and concerned about having the work done 100%. The first "bigger" project I had him work on was trimming some trees (5-6 different ones). He did an excellent job and since then I've had no problem asking to do additional plantings in the yard and additional work.
Initially, I met with him to explain what I wanted, and if there is ever anything else I need I email his wife--she calls occasionally and send invoices. The last gardener I'd email or call and never get a response--or I'd get a response and things wouldn't get done--the complete opposite of Gonzalez & Sons.
Typically you'll find that at first gardeners do a great job and over time they get lazy, the work gets half done or just starts to look unkempt. I can honestly say that the yard looks better than it ever has before--the trees look healthy and properly groomed, the shrubs are flowering and look full but properly maintained and the grass looks amazing. I keep wanting to take pictures of it fearing that it won't look as good next month, but it continues to look fantastic.
Whenever I have a question or request I can call and talk with Sam (or Claudia, his wife) and get stuff done. I like working with them and I believe they are happy to have me as a customer as well (even though I might be pickier than some others).
I definitely recommend giving Gonzalez & Sons a try.
