When I went to interview Dr Long, I asked him what I could do after the surgery, (physically) and he asked me what I wanted to do. I told him I wanted to run. He told me anything my dreams. He does 5 surgerys before lunch and pro bono surgerys. I saw him after the surgery. He told me that I am no longer in recovery, I was an athlete in training.
Description of Work: I had a hip revision, that was 20 years old and it was disintegrating.

Revision TKR surgery was done at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles. He has a team who works with him including an anesthesiologist who have worked with him for many years. The pre-op procedures were more complete and effective than the first surgery. It helped contribute to the success of the surgery. The actual surgery went well. Dr. Long took time to monitor the recovery with subsequent follow-up appointments. He had to deal with a long term extension problem. He guided me to a great physical therapist and coordinated the effort to achieve a good outcome. Dr. Long is a caring physician who takes time to listen and explain what needs to be done. He spends time with his patients and consequently he tends to run late but it it well worth the wait!
Description of Work: I needed revision knee surgery. The first total knee replacement had failed. Dr. Long explained what was wrong and the operation to fix it.

My operation was at KECK USC & I was very impressed with their "service". There was an instruction class 2 weeks before the surgery. About 10 patients attended. Some for partial knee replacement some for full knee replacement. EVERYONE was knowledgeable & explained things thoroughly. They handed out lots of information on what they were going to talk about so we'd have it to read at home if we didn't "get" it all in the 1+ hr class. Dr Gilbert looks to be around 50, if that! He's done over 3000 MAKOPLASTYs, that's the robot-assisted procedure I was walking the same day with crutches & only spent one night in the hospital. I'm 71 years old. By the way I know you won't believe me but the meal at KECK were very good. On pain pills for a couple of weeks. The first 4 weeks I had some pain...more like a strong ache at times. At other times none at all...as long as I was careful not to do something silly. I didn't "do" steps in the normal way until the 9th week. I probably could have but didn't want of mess up any of my progress. I had at home physical Therapy (PT) only 4 times because I my ability to bend & move the leg & knee was quite good. I just kept up the exercise on my own after the PT's 4 visits. I had no outside PT. It's well known that a "partial" knee replacement has a much shorter recovery time. The pain that I did have was not much to speak about, really. Guess the pain pills did a good job. Anyway, I got off of them as soon as I felt I was willing to see how the pain might be without them. So on the 4th week I began taking the pills at longer intervals & was completely off of them by week 4 1/2- 5. I'd highly recommend Dr Gilbert & KECK USC. He is very professional, empathetic & communicative. He'll take time to answer any of your concerns. It took me a long time to decide to go through with this & am glad I did it.
Description of Work: This was the day of my Medial...inside.partial knee replacement. MAKOPLASTY. Dr Gilbert is now at KECK USC in Los Angeles & he also has a Pasadena, Ca office.

I had suregry 1/22 /13 and was up the same day on a walker using the bathromm, no bedpans for me ! The next day I was up and walking on 2 crutches and even going up and downstairs ! The physcial therapist who works with Dr Dorr ,was excellent as well, sorry i fogot his name ...I was home after 2 nights for bi lateral THR!!!! a home PT came to work with mea few days later and put me on just one crutch.I live in a split level condo alone , so a freind came to stay for 10 days which was wonderful to have help and good company. I have been on my own since then and almost 4 weeks post op doing great , considering. Dr Dorr takes insurance and I dont have the best plan , so I feel lucky and blessed to be able to have had such an accomplished and respected surgeon. I expect total recovery and a beautiful active life soon. .
Description of Work: Arthritus Inst was founded by Dr Lawrence Dorr . He is now with Keck / USC hospital. I needed bi lateral THR caused by AVN. I did my research and found Dr Dorr is rated in top 1 % in the country for hip and knee replacement. I had consulted with two other surgeons prior to Dr Dorr and found Dr Dorr to be highly confident with out being arrongant or even the slight bit cocky. He is freindly and took his time with me awnsering questions etc...Many surgeons dont even want to do bi lateral surgerys because of insurance issues or past history .... I

Dr. Dorr replaced my fractured hip. He was wonderful. The staff and followup was wonderful. I am completely cured because of him. He is the best in the business and if I needed other orthopedic work done I would not go anyplace else. He is dedicated and knowledgeable and provided me with all the tools I needed to be back on my feet and walking without the dreaded limp or the pain. He performed a genuine miracle on me and because of him I am strong and healthy again. \ Florence Thys-Doucet
Description of Work: I had been seen by two other orthopods and they each misdiagnosed my condition. By the time I found Dr. Dorr my situation was critical. My bone was dying and walking was torture. The day I met Lawrence Dorr all that changed. He diagnosed my immediately and recommended surgery as quickly as possible. He has a fascinating class before the surgery to explain exactly how the procedure is performed and questions are encouraged. The day I went for surgery, which was less than 2 weeks after I met Dr. Dorr, I was comfortable with his staff and him and everything went as smoothly as silk. He was kind to my worried husband and made a point of coming out after the surgery to tell my husband that I had come through "with flying colors". He is a wonderful doctor and a compassionate man. You can't go wrong with him. Florence Thys-Doucet

In January of 2011,I was looking for an orthopedic surgeon to perform total knee replacement on my mom, who was going to come in from out of state for the surgery. Consequently, she was not around to do the vetting process herself. Plus, she is quite elderly and not internet savvy. So she asked me to help her pick one, and then she would fly out just prior to the pre-op and surgery dates. I spoke to Dr. Dorr's receptionist in an attempt to get some detailed information about how Dr. Dorr would perform the surgery, his experience with patients fitting my mom's medical profile, etc. As one might expect, numerous questions remained that the receptionist could not answer. I wanted to schedule a brief appointment with Dr. Dorr to ask the questions, either in person or on the phone. When he was asked to give me a brief call, I was told -- by his staff -- that he stated that he did not want my mom for a patient. I was appalled! Other surgeons had no problem actually sitting down with me and answering questions in person, some even noting that this was entirely appropriate since I would be choosing someone who would have my mom's life in their hands. This is the case with any major surgery like total knee replacement but especially for someone who is 81 with serious health problems. Either Dr. Dorr is extremely arrogant, thinking no one should dare to question his expertise. Or he is extremely insecure, unwilling to take on a patient who has a family member who might ask alot of questions. Either way, I found his behavior utterly unacceptable.

He specializes in hip surgery, but he has another doctor in his practice that specializes only in knees. He is such a pro, he is amazing. He fixed my leg that was not properly diagnosed for 2 years and 5 days after the surgery I was walking up and down stairs without assistance. His personality, bedside manner and his just plain ability stands out about him. When I go to the office I work with the same team in the hospital. They are the same people I have for postoperative care and physical therapy, so they are always the same people. I know who they are and they know who I am and that is important. I am a nurse and I have never had care like the care I have got from him. I would tell others that if they had a bad knee, hip, shoulder or bone I would recommend him. Everyone one there treats me like an adult.

I believe that there are 6 practitioners in that group. My orthopedic surgeon there fixed my leg that was not properly diagnosed for 2 years. Five days after the surgery I was walking up and down stairs without assistance. When I go to the office I work with the same team in the hospital. They are the same people that I see for postoperative care and physical therapy. I know who they are and they know who I am and that is important. I am a nurse and I have never had care like the care I have got from him. I would tell others that if they had a bad knee, hip, shoulder or bone I would recommend him. Everyone one there treats me like an adult and not a 5 year old. No surgery is performed in this practice.

There was a point where I could hardly walk but it's been about six years and sometimes I forget that I had any knee replacement. It's the finest clinic I think I've ever seen. I went in beforehand and met all of the doctors that would be working on me during the surgery such as the anesthesiologist, nurses, and surgeons. Then they gave me a booklet letting me know exactly what was going to be happening during the surgery. It made me feel comfortable because I knew everyone and I knew what to expect. Any problems I can call and they will respond within the day.
