On the day, two installers arrived within the given time range. They were pleasant, quiet and extremely kind about adjusting things so that my aged mother could get back into a bedroom as soon as possible. I felt very comfortable with them in the house and they were great about leaving things neat and tidy.
A couple of days later, Lisa came to the house to check that I was satisfied with everything and to see the work.
From start to finish, it was a positive experience, with great customer service, decent pricing and quality work.
I caretake my father, a USMC-Retired Octogenarian, and MAC's efforts to accommodate him were great from the bidding to the selection of flooring products. Before leaving the country for my wedding, I had confirmed the dates with Brad for times during the day to minimize the impact on my father, the start dates of the laminate & carpeting, and the completion date was set for the week before I was to have CANCER surgery. In addition, I had to put my father in a temporary home during this 10 day period.
Initially, the process was great: the laminate workers were courteous, careful, cleaned after themselves daily, put all furniture, etc. back, and completed the work timely.
Our problems began when it was time for the carpeting to be installed. Brad, the scheduler was either confused or did not put down the date he said would be the start of carpeting. There wasn't enough carpeting to complete the project and I was told additional carpeting needed to be ordered, which caused a delay. The workmen were rushed from another project that morning, were tired and not courteous, nor did they return items after they were moved. The delay for carpet reorder meant that my father was at risk for a fall because of unstable footing and he refused to leave his home once the initial work was started -- causing him dementia-infused stress.
When they came back a second time, they still didn't have enough carpeting! By this time, I was in recovery and could not attend to the project for several weeks. When we did not get a reply from the scheduler about the delay, we reached out to our salesman. Rick's reply was that he couldn't help us because he doesn't get involved once the bid is accepted. A voicemail left with Kristen was not returned. Finally, we spoke with Grant who explained the comedy of errors involving the carpeting manufacturer's product and promised to get back with us at the beginning of the next week with the solution -- which never happened. Instead, we received an apologetic call from Brad (the solution?).
MAC was competitively priced, have very good products, and once we got past the sale, the experience suffered from very poor customer service and execution.
"Dear [Member Name Removed], First of all we are very sorry for your personal situation and have been sympathetic since our initial meeting in the showroom. There were a lot of moving parts regarding the sequence of events related to your installation, mainly stemming from the manufacturer sending us carpet short of what we had ordered... twice. In regards to communication, we were diverted to both you and your significant other which facilitated miscommunications between all parties, specifically because you kept trying to reach staff members that were not in the installation department regarding setting installation dates and times. Brad was clearly assigned to you as your main point of contact. As a company we are all responsible for servicing our customers, but this was made clear to you and information was being shared between too many parties as we all accepted your and your wife's calls through the process trying to assist you. Again we apologize for the inconvenience and wish you well."
Sadly the mistakes that followed as a result of their miscalculation of the time and effort it would take to remove our floors and the hasty effort they put forward to remedy their mistakes caused irreparable damage to our home and family. The problem stemmed from the poor job they did when they did not do their research and misjudged the time and effort it would take for them to remove our existing pre-finished hardwood floors , they quoted us 2 days for a job that ended up taking them 10 days. Normally this could have been an unforeseeable situation for them because when beginning to remove a flooring product you usually cannot see how the floor was installed. This however was not the case, they not only could see how the floor was previously installed (because a portion had already been removed post water damage and was fully exposed) I , the homeowner, on several occasions made a point of telling our sales rep. how the floor had been installed and that the job to remove will be difficult so please make sure to look carefully and bid very carefully as with our job, timing was of the essence..
Sadly they chose to stick with there original quote and asked me not to worry. That cost me , my cabinet maker and delayed my entire job by well over a month, costing us several thousands of dollars not reimbursable by our insurance company.
It appears they misrepresented themselves as to their knowledge and capability regarding removal of hardwood flooring over a dual sub floor that was both nailed and glued down. Further based upon the definition of their C15 license, it appears questionable as to whether their license even covers such an extensive removal of flooring, or simply allows for the preparation for new flooring.
I have not even touched upon the damage to my home due to improper prep and covering of my appliances and built in furnishings. Their negligent safety standards (ask me to show you the picture of their workers using a sparking blade saw over a plastic bag of wood) in my family room.
And the garbage that was left for days on my kitchen floor after their workers took food breaks.
Perhaps for a simple quick install they are adequate , at least according to their Yelp reviews (which is incidentally how I found them ) . But, BUYERS BEWARE if you have a difficult removal .
Just as a side note, their prices for wood floors ended up being noticeably higher product for product. Very glad I decided not to use them for installation.
"This is Kristin Topping, owner of MAC Flooring. I want to let you know that we take all comments and concerns very seriously and try our absolute best to accommodate the needs of every one of our customers. After thorough investigation of this incident and your review, I have found many inconsistencies with what you stated in your review vs our records of what actually happened. All of the work we did is within the scope of our C15 license in preparation for new flooring installation. We covered all areas where we were working in with plastic, and there was no physical damage to the home (we have pictures to support this). Lastly, we have yet to be paid for the work performed on your property and have been trying to get in touch with you offline to come to a resolution. At your earliest convenience, please call me: (949) 600-7779 so we can come to a resolution. Thank you. Regards, Kristin Topping Owner"
Very well. We had not replaced the carpeting in our home for the 35 years we have lived here. We decided to re-carpet almost the entire house, despite the difficulties we knew this would entail. Rick Mink was very helpful in guiding us through the process, and in advance in showing us the many possible products available. This included even getting color matches from a carpet manufacturer that will produce carpets dyed for individual consumers. The installers arrived on time and worked very hard for a long day the first day and part of the second day to install, remove old carpeting, clean up afterwards, move boxes and furniture back. After we discovered that a few electrical cords were not back where we needed them to be and a few large pieces of furniture needed to be re-centered against walls and that the closet door gliders for 2 closets had not been replaced, another installer came to fix those items. Then, Rick Mink came to the house and inspected the work and answered our questions. We are very pleased with the work, the professional behavior of everyone we worked with.
One of the biggest advantages of using MAC Flooring is that their staff work 6 full days a week. Since our entire downstairs was covered in plastic or being worked on, and we were still living in the house the entire time, it was important that the project got completed as soon as possible.
We would recommend Grant and Mac Flooring to anyone looking for flooring and we would be more than happy to use them again in the future.
The only thing I could say was that they kept pulling guys off the job and we ended up have to have them there for 4 days instead of 3 days. On the 4th day they pulled guys off the job again and they were there until 9:30pm. I called to talk to them about it, because i had to take time off of work for the 4th day, and they never called me back.
"Member has indicated that work was performed which is untrue. MAC Flooring reserved the right to refuse service to this person as we were not comfortable doing what was being asked of us. We are professionals in our industry and this member is incorrect in her allegations."
The end result is a beautiful new floor. We are now in process to have them carpet and tile our upstairs.
