Really pleased with everyone who worked on the job, especially Gabriel, and feel fortunate to have found them.
Worth every penny and then some!
There are separate parts to my review that lands me at this1 star rating. Let me outline my entire experience:
We had just moved in and wanted to plan a repipe the house anyway. my house began to smell like s***. .... so in a couple days
I called repipe1 as they were number 1 in Angie's list and they were advertising "50% cheaper" than other repiping. The owner was very nice on the phone I asked for a free estimate. He sent Miguel the "project manager" (should be called sales person). He just briefly shone a flashlight under my house and said I had category 3 damage and needed restoration as well as a full repipe and redrain. We were looking estimates at $15,000 already. He said we had to move quickly and I needed to stop using all water in my kitchen drainage. And that Miguel could have all the work done in 10 days. My husband agreed without a second bid on this job. This was the beginning of a trail of miscommunication and lagging. Not to mention the 50% LOWER bids we missed out on in hindsight.
I was desperately trying to find ways to cut cost and make this more affordable and this was not something that was given much attention my Miguel. He said "our prices are what they are because we do a quality job" ..... Ok? I had to find other ways to drive down cost. Don't bother adding services because this company is overpriced for general plumbing work (WAY OVERPRICED). I was extremely happy when Miguel called back with a price adjustment but I knew it was because I had called their office several times ...
Repipe restoration took over 1 week to complete and it seemed that these two companies that were under the same ownership could not for the life of them communicate with each other. Restoration was to call my homeowners insurance to find coverage and I HAVE YET TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. I called over and over to remind them. They finished work and did not communicate with repipe 1 that they were complete immediately in order to start my repipe. I was left to do dishes in my BATHTUB FOR ALMOST 3 weeks. If they had a smooth communication process then repipe restoration would have been followed by repipe immediately and the job would have been completed in 10 business days.
Miguel also mentioned that he would be actively managing this project and he will be there every day. I did not see him when repipe finally started so we left our house to two men we just met randomly that morning. It was not comfortable but we didn't even bother to call him at that point again. Why would we? We just wanted this project over. was finally able to take a shower last night, and noticed that the water was not hot. it was lukewarm. I thought it would be helpful to let Repipe1 know that, and possibly they can adjust this. but Tina Rivera responded with an abrupt email that I purchased the wrong water heater and this is why its not hot. The blame was easily shifted to me, and as your emails are recorded, you can go back and see how uncaring my treatment has been. This was the last straw for me as Miguel was the one who held my phone and looked at amazon.com with me and selected this water heater. The PM began to text me that its $1200 for them to replace the water heater, and $125 labor. I am in tears at work. How dare you charge me to rectify the mistake that you made? this was ridiculous. This is not a company I can ever recommend to a friend. I feel CHEATED and USED. Now I have to have lukewarm water forever unless I can cough up another $1200 dollars to change the water heater, and pay for labor. This was not my mistake. Why am I help responsible for these whopping additional costs, as well as the headache of dealing with an online return due to the mistake of those that I trusted to be professionals in this area. I find that the actual job will now take the total of 3 weeks (not the initial promise of 10 days), to include patchwork and inspection. again I am more frustrated than anything due to the fact that no one had ever taken the time to let me know what I am to expect, when, and in what order, and what other costs may incur.
Pricing - one star
Timeliness - one star
Communication- one star (I still don't have an itemized contract that is legible)
Resourcefulness- one star (this is for "oh we got your insurance voicemail so we are just waiting for a call... " Instead of trying different departments or numbers)
The actual plumbers and finished product- 4 stars (well... They finish today and I am scared to post this early in fear of them messing with me in revenge of this review) the guys who did the plumbing were good plumbers. The business operations on the other hand had a lot to be desired.
In conclusion I am almost $15,000 poorer but glad my house doesn't smell like s***. But did it have to come to this? I have written to Danny Z the owner as well as their management this morning and have not received any emails addressing this issue. In fact Miguel has gone around me to pressure my more quiet and soft spoken husband to go ahead and eat the cost of the replacement water heater. I cannot believe this company brags of its Angie's list status. I would tell any friend or family member to RUN before they deal with repipe 1.
UPDATE*** I spoke to my insurance agent and had to give them all the information for repipe reconstruction because the insurance had never received any calls. He then reached out to Repipe, and was unable to get an invoice or record of work from them which I didn't get either. he was told that some will call him. I was verbally quoted between $2000 and $2500 for the work and finally I received an email and a voicemail of Repipe Reconstruction letting me know "we went ahead and contacted your insurance and here is their information for your record" as if they were the ones that did this work. The invoice was over $3000 now. We were never communicated with any cost increases during this process. yes, they had promised to do it and call insurance too, but never did.
BUYER BEWARE!!! NO INSURANCE DEALS DIRECTLY WITH PLUMBING, if plumbers say they will call your insurance for you, they are on track to start work and create a bill for you before calling insurance, because some of the services I was billed for, insurance would have provided FREE OF CHARGE, I had confirmed with Mercury Homeowners Insurance. No one is owning up to his mess at Repepe1, and Miguel has just flat out LIED about his actions and his involvement with choosing the water heater, and with promising to supervise his team.
Good luck staying #1 on Angie's list with this kind of customer service. I am heartbroken that Angie's List was the reason I chose Repipe1 in the first place.
We gathered three bids from Angie's List providers and selected Repipe 1 based on their overall presentation, bid price, and our confidence that they could get the job done relatively quickly. Chris Kirksey was the project manager who came out to give us the bid and then he did the scheduling of the work crew. Because our drain lines were as old as our water pipes, we figured this was the appropriate time to replace them as well since the walls would be open anyway. If you just do a repipe (no drain lines) figure that your cost will be about half of ours. Repipe 1 obtained the building permits for us and worked with the city to coordinate inspections. Plan to do some prep work in cleaning out the cabinets under your kitchen and bath sinks so they can get in there to work. They needed to move our washer and dryer out of the way to run those pipes, but they did all the moving for us. They also moved the refrigerator out from the wall to work back there.
Repiping is a big job that is scary, since you have crews cutting holes in your walls, and in our case, also in the ceiling of one room. They did a great job protecting our furniture and carpets, placing drop cloths in the areas where they were working and also having plastic sheeting from the ceiling to wall off the area where they were cutting to minimize dust. They removed some of the old piping and other pipes were abandoned in place. New pex (plastic) hot and cold water lines were installed. You can also have them do copper repiping if you prefer, but our research showed some horror stories about pinhole leaks developing in copper, so we opted to go with pex. We couldn't believe the sorry condition of some of the old galvanized pipes they took out of our house. They were so corroded that it's a miracle any water got through at all.We are glad we had this work done BEFORE a major pipe break could occur.
The job took about a week in total. The cutting of walls and installation of new piping takes about 2 to 3 days. Then you need a day for the city inspector to come by and approve the work. After approval, there is 1 to 2 days of drywall patching by a different crew. Then you need a day for the final inspection by the city. Amazingly, they have you back in water at the end of work each day so you don't have to move out during this process. Since our water heater was over 10 years old, we opted to buy a new one and Repipe 1 installed it for us at no extra charge.
We were very impressed with the drywall patching. They did a great job and it was hard to tell there were ever holes in the walls. However, we still had the old popcorn ceilings and the patch job on that wasn't very good. They matched the texture as close as they could but it still looked a bit like patchwork. We were planning to have the popcorn ceilings removed in the future, but the sad state of the ceiling prompted us to move this work up on our timeline of home improvements. Now that the popcorn ceilings are gone, there is no sign that any repiping was ever done. Overall, we were very happy with the process and would recommend them to others on Angie's List.
