We gave him a $7K deposit for wood and some labor. He then stopped returning phone calls and emails. Were panicked. He then showed up a week late and said he has an illness in the family in Nevada and apologized profusely and said he would be at our home with the wood in a couple of days. The wood arrived and they began the work 2 weeks later than originally agreed. This was a partnership arrangement with me handling everything and our partner paying the bills. 10 days later the house is still in chaos and not done. They do not clean up after themselves and the house is in total disarray. Personal belongings are tossed around like garbage and my business phone is tossed into the garbage. They took the old floors off the stairs and kept saying they would do the stairs tomorrow. Three weeks later, the house was still not done, and we were living in total chaos. On average they came to work at 10:30 AM (he claimed he had to drop his kids off at school and that's why it took so long - he's 45 minutes from my house...what school do you know of that starts at 9:30AM??) then they would go to lunch at 12:30 for 90 minutes and come back and work until 4:30. I finally got angry and said what was the deal with getting this done and putting in a days work. He was always slippery like trying to catch water and just kept saying "it will get done". His father Oscar did most of the work, which he walked around a lot. His father also did a fireplace tile for us in the end, and did it all unlevel and didn't finish the job. I met with my partner to discuss the issues, only to find he had gone behind my back directly to the partner and had now been paid $13,000 or $1000 more than the whole job was quoted. May painting guy was reattaching what baseboards were put up as a 15 foot baseboard had an average of 3 nails in it, and the gaps between boards was huge. I finally confronted him about the money, and he said "Oh I didn't do the invoice and didn't know, but we will need to renegotiate as the stairs were not included in the bid". I waved the contract at him and he said well I made a mistake so we need to discuss the matter and I am out of lumber. He then went behind my back again and asked my partner for $200 for wood. His father came back to "finish" the fireplace, and did not. He said he and Walter would be back on Thurs and finish everything. That was a Monday, we never heard from them again. Phone calls, emails, certified letters all unanswered. We had a friend call him for a flooring estimate and he picked up the phone. We hired someone to fix the mess for another $4000. (Florence Flooring, great guys) We are now suing him for these costs as well as general aggravation. We were also told the wood we bought was top of the line, and found out it was B grade. Don't be fooled by this father son team, they are con artists. I also found out from other contractors in the house that he used to work out of Las Vegas and has law suits against him there.
Description of Work: Hired him and his Dad Oscar because they had a good price and seemed like good family people. He was to do the entire house in hardwood floors including the two staircases, all molding and trim. he said it would take 3-5 days to complete. The quote was $11,500 with possible more money for under carpet floorboard issues, maybe $500 more in fees.
