UPDATE:
Soon after the initial work was done in March 2014, we noticed that the tile where the work was completed had shifted slightly out from the row above it. The grout cracked, so I called Mike to let him know. He said it wasn't a problem and that we should just grout it over with a silicone grout. We did, but later saw that there were still cracks happening.
Today (11/2015) we noticed water creeping across the floor of a closet that shares a wall with the bathroom shower that was repaired. It took a year and a half, but the water leached through a crack in the grout, saturated the backing and collected in the pvc pan liner that's supposed to drain anything that gets behind the tile, but sadly, did not.
The issue was two-fold. First, the row of tiles that Mike put in had a different backing and were more rigid than the tiles that were originally there, so they responded to settling differently. Second- the pvc liner that is supposed to collect the water that gets behind the tile did not drain at all. When we cut away the molded wallboard in my closet to get behind the shower, we saw the water just filled to the brim in the liner. When we turned on the shower against the wall where the work was done, the water literally flowed right into and over the liner into my closet. According to the contractor that took apart the wall and pointed out the issues, it appears that either the concrete backing is preventing the water from draining the liner, or the angle of the shower floor isn't sufficient enough to drain the water...or both.
The only reason we did not notice this sooner is because we have a safe attached to our closet floor up against that wall. It took the water leaching on the floor beyond the safe for us to notice it.
Mike is a nice guy and very earnest, but the workmanship on this job is below what we would expect of a professional. Even though it's been a year and a half since the work was done, the amount of mold on the wallboard shows that this has been happening for a while.
UPDATE 1/19/2016
I just read Mke's Tile Works response and all I can say is that we will have to agree to disagree about how that initial conversation and the subsequent conversation about my husband fixing the grout a couple of months after we paid for repairs went. There was evidence of leakage and that's why I called Mike to begin with. Also, I don't live in the San Ramon Valley, so the earthquakes he references do not affect me. I am not sure why someone would tear out and repair something that didn't need to be fixed if he felt strongly about it. I'm not going to get into a He said./She said discussion but after I contacted Mike about the leakage from the work that he did, complete with pictures, he did not initially accept responsibility. I contacted his bond company, but hadn't yet submitted any formal claim. Mike has recently agreed to repay me for the emergency corrective work we had to do to get the shower operational again, which was much appreciated. I consider this matter resolved. Again, Mike is a good guy, but sometimes a job does not go well despite someone's lengthy experience.
"Mrs. [Member Name Removed] initially contracted me to replace her shower pan because she said someone told her it was leaking. I proceeded to remove the shower pan and in the process noticed that there were no leaks coming through the shower pan. I explained this to Mrs. [Member Name Removed] and also explained that what I observed was actually big cracks on the grout all the way from the floor to the ceiling and in between tiles. In the same respect, I observed that there was no moisture underneath the shower pan, but rather observed moisture from the cracks above the shower pan, which I also tried to explain to Mrs. [Member Name Removed] It appeared to me that the walls in the shower experience more movement, which may be causing the cracks. I offered to fix the cracks with silicon grout at no additional charge in an effort to help her solve the problem. Several months later she called and told me that she noticed cracks in the grout again. I offered again to go back and take a look and fix it by applying more silicon grout. She asked me if this was something her husband could do and I advised that it was fine if that is what she wanted to do, but to call me if the problem persisted. I believe that the original problem may continue to be the problem today. When I installed the shower pan, I put in a proper slope and proper drain for the shower pan to drain through the whip holes. If there is a lot of moisture going behind the pan from the cracks up high, than the problem is not the shower pan. Regarding the shifting of the tile, when I initially installed the new tiles, I noticed that they did not perfectly line up, which is common among repair jobs like the one Mrs. [Member Name Removed] requested. However, if the tiles have shifted since then, it is more likely due to the wall above the shower pan. It is also important to recognize that San Ramon Valley has recently experienced several earthquakes of various magnitudes that may have effected the work. I never denied working with Mrs. [Member Name Removed] to fix the problem but she instead decided to file a claim through my bond. I am still willing and able to work towards resolving the matter with Mrs. [Member Name Removed] in the best way possible. I am open to negotiating but do not agree to the proposed resolution."
The best part was that the tile looked fantastic! We couldn't be happier with the quality of the work he did.
We are planning on using him for any jobs he can do t our new property.
Mike had some good suggestions as he went along which made the job turn out more sophisticated than we envisioned.
Another reason I would highly recommend Mike is his work ethic and seamless manners. He arrived when he said he would, worked full days (even in the rain), and cleaned up every day before he went home. He is meticulous about leaving the job site tools picked up and surfaces clean. He took some orders changes and made accommodations with grace . It is clear he is more interested in the quality of this work than his personal time line. He is a gentleman at all times and professional.
Since this project we have engaged Mike to tile a guest bath room, shower and floor, and utility room floor. Beautiful work.
We will use Mike's services again.
