While working out the details for the colored concrete decking for our pool as a sub, the contractor also provided us with a bid for landscaping based on our own landscape plan (a detailed plot plan including identification of specific plants), yet still included a $4k charge for 'designing'. We declined that service but signed for the remainder of the landscaping work which included low-voltage lighting, sprinkler system installation, soil amendment, plants and trees, and mulch. Despite our detailed plan, multiple discussions and faxes, this contractor provided his own selection of plants and installed them without our approval. Many of these plants died within 6 months, and some were planted completely contradictory to their instructions. There were many problems with the installed sprinkler system. Also, there were multiple failures in the concrete decking within 90 days. This contractor refused to warranty ANY of his work. The pool contractor brought in another concrete company to perform the warranty repairs on the concrete decking failures. The work was excellent but the overall finish was just adequate, as custom-colored concrete is very difficult to match. We filed a complaint against this contractor with the California Dept. of Consumer Affairs' Contractors State License Board. We won $400. What a joke.
