hDoor King telephone entry system had not been working properly for some time and when it rained it put our phone line out of service. In the past I had used the repair service of the installation company, but they refused to send out two techs to locate the break in the line and it was left to me to work with the tech at the gate controls and me on the house phone listening for tones.
When I heard Door King had introduced a wireless adapter for the system, I thought that would be a solution to the broken connection without having to trench our lawn and pull a new wire.
I googled who had the adapter in my neighborhood and picked one that was on Angie's List and had a current website. I made an appointment for the owner Eric to come estimate the job. Eric explained they weren't that impressed with the Door King wireless adapter and it would probably cost less to trench and pull new wire and just fix what I already had.
I also asked if he could move and electrical outlet to the other side of the gate. If the original gate installers had used common sense, they wouldn't have cemented over the existing outlet and I could still use it to plug in outdoor lights without opening the gate. Now I needed to feed it thru the gate or leave the gate open to use the outlet. Eric said he would do that for me and include it in his job estimate.
On the day of the job, Eric got his two techs started and came to check on them in the afternoon. We tested it when they were finished and I could hear them, but they couldn't hear me, which was one of the problems the other company had come out to fix. Eric quickly found the microphone was bad and said he would need order a new one from Door King. It would be $75 and I wouldn't need to be home when he came to install it.
His office called me when the part came in and said that Eric would be over to install the new part on his way home. It only took him a few minutes, we were able to talk back and forth over the gate intercom and I was able to open the gate from the house phone.
It cost at least $300 less than the price of the wireless adapter itself.
