I arranged a time. They arrived on time!
I left them at the property and they told me when they would be done. They finished on time as promised. I felt they did a great job! the shower stall had several cracks and they fixed them before refinishing. I would use them again.

Doug was prompt to the estimating appointment. I asked him to describe the process because I'm very sensitive to fumes and we had pets. He explained that his staff would do a deep clean on the refinish areas, apply the premixed chemicals and then run a hose out to the nearest window / sliding glass door to ventilate the fumes. His staff came out; laid a combination of canvas and bed sheets on the floor; taped the walls, sink and mirrors; cleaned our counters; and applied the premixed chemicals. He ran a fan in the closed bathrooms, but he did not run a hose to ventilate the fumes. When he was done, he wrapped everything up and was ready to leave. I stopped in to see the finished product and was horrified to see all the lint, fine bubbles, and pin-sized holes all over the counter. I was hard pressed to find any area of the counter that was smooth. When I asked him about all the flaws, he said that I would just need to buff it out. This was news to me. Doug never said that I needed to buff anything. I called Doug right away. Doug did explain that the flaws were common and could be buffed out for an additional $300-400. I told him that he never told me about this additional task or cost and I would not pay it, but expected him to fix the problem. He whined on the phone over and over again about how I should pay for this additional work, but I insisted that he fix the problem without additional cost to me since he never mentioned this step before. He and his attitude did come over to buff out the flaws a couple days later. The fine pin holes and minute bubbles still dot our counters. The counters were not 100% smooth.

Well, the guy was always late and it seemed that the price was way too much. The first time the shower was not sanded properly and they had to come back. They came back for three hours and finally, they got it to be satisfactory. Normally, I am pretty easy going and do not follow these people around. Our handyman actually looked at it and told us that it was not sanded properly. Most people I had talked to gave a good recommendation so I guess we will have to see if it will last for five years or not. It was a difficult job. The owner was great, but he had hired a few guys to work for him and obviously they did not care. I don t know they seemed to do a decent job. I would probably recommend them, but not in a glorious way. It is hard to tell. They just do not work very well to make it right.

I called San Rafael Coating on a Tuesday and they came and did the job that same week on Friday. The woman who answered the phone was very professional and answered all my questions upfront. She told me the cost of refinishing the tub and all potential additional costs that could come up (ours was $345 for the refinishing + $75 extra because of acid damage). This is a two part process, the initial re-coating took approximately 6 hours. The gentleman who did the work was polite, courteous and on-time. My husband and I both work so we let him in, he did the job and let himself out, no problem. The owner, Doug Jones, returned the next day and examined the finish for any defects. He then gave the tub a final sanding and was done within about fifteen minutes. Doug is very knowledgeable about older homes (ours was built in 1930) and has been in business for over 25 years. Our tub looks brand new at a fraction of the cost (and hassle) it would be to replace it.

Doug - who answers the phone (owner?) - very informative and made a point to discuss details that might increase my cost (such as reinstalling the lower track of my sliding doors if they needed to be removed). Technician called that he would be late (vehicle mechanical failure)he was polite and cleaned up nicely. There was some dripping of the surface on the outside of the tub, but the inside is perfect. Tech warned me in advance of things that may go wrong (e.g. rusted screws - one of ours did break off) and what he was and was not responsible for. I appreciated that.

Doug and everyone at San Rafael were very polite, extremely helpful, and knowledgeable, taking time on the phone to explain the refinishing process and the specifications on the materials used. The work was performed on time with care to exacting standards, and exactly as estimated. Doug himself comes to inspect the job once completed. In addition to being a conscientious contractor, he was very knowledgeable about historic homes- an added bonus. The tub and sink look wonderful. Overall, San Rafael was an excellent choice- a bit more expensive than some, but well worth it for a quality job and lasting, quality materials.
