They ended up just leaving the telling me to call their manager. None of the tasks were completed and they ended up just putting the original thermostat back on. Don't let these guys near your A/C system or unit. Talking to their manager, I didn't want to have them come back and TRY to do more work because if you can't figure out a thermostat I don't want you messing around with my A/C unit, which I am sure is much more complicated and has more opportunity for damage.
I ended up getting the Nest thermostat installed, but NOT by this company. Over a month and a half later they charge my credit card for $425. I never even gave them the credit card for this job, signed for any work done or job order, was given any receipts, and gave no authorization. They simply already had a credit card on file from a job they did through my homeowner insurance. Very shady and possibly even fraud.
I called them and asked them to remove the charge since they never completed any of the work. Somehow they still think I owe them for the time they spent tinkering and googling my thermostat and the lady I talked to ends the conversation with "We'll see you in court".
Bottom line is they charge a credit card they were never given, for work they never completed, without any notice or authorization from me. Hopefully other people will be able to avoid this headache and wasted time. They are the whole reason I joined Angie's List, because I want to avoid ever wasting time talking to a company who would put me through this kind of h*** again.
The technician noted the following on their work order: "impacted evap coil must cemical [sic] clean to continue diag."
The technician told us that he was unsure whether said chemical cleaning was covered by the American Home Shield warranty, but that the company would be in touch. The next day, Comfort Zone contacted us and told us that the evaporator coil chemical clean was not under warranty and that the cost would be $299. We decided to go ahead based on this estimate, and called to make an appointment to have it done. We were told that we had an appointment for Thursday, 9/4. When we had not heard anything by 1 pm that day, we called to check when they planned to show up. We were then told that our appointment was actually for Friday, 9/5. Despite the fact that we had triple checked the date of the original appointment, we accepted the schedule change.
The following morning, Friday, 9/5, we received a telephone call informing us of the time window during which the technician would arrive, and informing us that the cost of an evaporator coil chemical cleaning was going to be $548. When I reminded the caller of the previous estimate, I was told that the $299 estimate was for a condenser cleaning.
Nowhere on any paperwork in my possession nor at any time during any conversation that I had with the original technician was the requirement for a condenser cleaning mentioned.
This is a blatant example of an attempt to defraud me using an obvious bait and switch scheme. I'm following up with a complaint to the California Department of Consumer Affairs as I believe this is an illegal deceptive practice.
The guys showed up just at the tail end of the appointment window without calling ahead. Not a good start.
There were two people, it looked like a father & son team. The younger guy seemed to be there to take orders from the older guy. Their dynamic is not my problem.
They went around upstairs and took readings. They then went to the AC unit and did some stuff. As I asked questions they gave me vague answers. I was with them the whole time and I saw that they never performed any work.
The older guy started writing up a service sheet, so I asked what he was writing. He said we need a maintenance and air balancing. I asked him if he already had approval to do the work or needs me to call the home warranty company. He said they're not going to do any work at all and they don't do maintenance or balancing. Huh?!
So we still didn't have a working AC. However, based on their recommendation, we called another company to do a maintenance call. They showed up and basically said our unit isn't working, there isn't anything to maintain. So, what did this guy do?
We had to recall our home warranty and have another person come out and diagnose the compressor being bad and have it replaced.
So not only did Comfort Zone do nothing, except waste my Saturday time, they couldn't get the diagnosis right! We'll use someone else and make sure they never come back.
went out and we immediately needed to resolve the issue as the weather was
starting to get colder. I called Comfort Zone Heating and Cooling on Sunday
afternoon and from the moment I called, they were very helpful. They asked me
key questions as well as gave me options on how they could help. The three
other places I called did not ask any questions and told me they would send a
technician out for around $80-$90 but that was only to tell me what was wrong
with the furnace.
Ronald from Comfort
Zone came out the next morning. He was knowledgeable and honest about what
could be the key issue with such an old unit and walked me through it. He
provided me with detail options which involved either fixing the current unit
or replacing it. He gave me price options on the spot. In addition, he informed
me of rebates I would be eligible to receive if I got the furnace replaced. He
went the extra step and called the suppliers directly to find out the exact
amount I would receive based on the furnace efficiency. We agreed a new unit
could be placed in on Wednesday morning. In the mean time, Ronald replaced a
part which would help with keeping the furnace working (by manually lighting
the pilot) for the two nights at no extra charge, since I was replacing my unit
with them. In addition to this, he also replaced the thermostat in the tenant's
unit with one I had already purchased.
During new furnace
installation, both Ronald and his helper were very professional, showed up on
time, and answered all of my questions. They got the work done fast and cleaned
up any mess they made. They walked me through the information I would need to
submit for rebate. They even answered some questions I had about an HVAC unit I
had gotten installed previously by someone else in another unit. I would
definitely recommend Comfort Zone Heating and Cooling to anyone who has heating
& cooling needs.
Thank you very much, Highly Recomended
