The job was to re-do a nearly black floor that was refinished by a hack a few years earlier. I had never been happy with it, I explained to Bob, and would like to be able to see the wood grain. He assured me they would do a good job. When the agreed upon day came, they sent out Paul, a very nice young man who seemed to work hard. Unfortunatly, things did not go as planned. After Paul had sanded down and done what they called a 'water pop', he stained the floor to get it ready to seal. We were not allowed to walk on the floor after the water pop because it would flatten the grain. So after the floor was stained and the first coat of sealer on it, I was able to take a look at what had been done. I was horrified to see grooves and scratches from the orbital sander all over the floor, but especially around the edges. It looked terrible. When Paul arrived the next day, I told him I wasn't happy and asked him to fix it. He worked on it without any attitude or complaint. The problem is at this point, what I now believe should have been done is the whole floor sanded down again to remove the sealer and stain, and sand with finer sandpaper so that it had a smooth finish. Paul tried to make the repairs by sanding just the areas in question. When he re-stained and re-sealed those areas, they ended up darker than the rest of the floor. This happened several times and each time the areas treated got bigger!
After spending two weeks on what was estimated to be a 5 day job, I asked Tom (for the 3rd time- he refused to come the first two times) to come take a look at it. He arrived the next morning, glanced around and told me he was willing to fix TWO of the problem areas. I told him that wasn't acceptable and that there were still major scratches from sanding. He repeated that he would fix two of the areas. I pointed out a third area right next to the area he was willing to fix. He said he didn't want to argue but I had two choices. I could accept his offer to fix the two area he pointed out, or that he would walk away from the job. He said he works with 'women like me' all the time, that once the furniture was in place we would never notice the problems, that I was unreasonable to expect them to be careful with my other moulding and baseboards (which now have to all be repainted!), and that I could not expect them to sand the floor smooth and not leave obvious scratches. I told that fixing only two of the areas (there are MANY) was not good enough- that I was paying full price and I wanted quality work. He said he wouldn't be able to help me. I told him I was very sorry to hear that and he shook my hand and walked off the job.
I haven't paid for what he did do, and he didn't ask for anything. I'm left with having been off my floors for two weeks and now not having them even close to finished. I would run, not walk, away from these guys. Between Bob and Tom's condescending attitude and the shoddy workmanship, they are not worth a second look. I understand contractors are hungry out there. Find someone who is hungry enough to do a good job!
***UPDATE- It has been less than a week since VHF walked off the job. The floor hasn't been cleaned or treated in any way yet. I was preparing to dust it today and noticed more/ different problems. There are several places where the finish coat has blistered and is coming off. Just when I thought it I was through with the bad part! Now I have no choice but to hire someone to fix this disaster! They should be ashamed!
"After 40 years in business here in Fresno, I must walk away from some clients who have Expectations of Ethan Allen furniture perfection, instead of a 70 yr old reconditioned floor. As a National Wood Flooring Association Member for many years, it is stated in "EXPECTATIONS" that a floor should be inspected from a Standing position and not in glaring reflection. Unfortunately I found this client's Expectations above what we could provide and I left with out the $1,000.00 fee we were charging her. Yes our attempts to remedy her CLOSET area were not 'perfect'. My successes in The Fresno Area since 1969 are many, so I can only do my best when challenged with desires for Perfection.....in a Closet!"
We had our 50 year old hardwood floors sanded and finished (after my son and I pulled out wall to wall carpet which had covered the living room, bedrooms, and hallway hardwood flooring). What an amazing transformation of the look of our home. The floors look beautiful. We also had VHF install 4 1/4" baseboard at the same time. The combination of new baseboard with the refinished floors was beautiful and so worth it (included in the cost above). We are totally satisfied with their job.
Tom and Bob are a pleasure to work with and my wife and I highly recommend Valley Hardwood Flooring if you need hardwood floors refinished. We will consider VHF for new installation of hardwood flooring in our kitchen/dining area this coming year when we plan to do our kitchen remodel.
