They were very nice, but we did have a problem with boxes that were suppose to go to San Diego were put in storage, this was a
real drag. Jackie offered to open all the crates so I could get them but it wasn't worth the hassle.
Jackie was alway available or returned my calls quickly and the teams were very friendly and professional.
Packers for Move Pros were sloppy, lazy and incompetent. We had an expensive glass chandalier that I specifically pointed out as needing to be packed carefully because of its value and fragility. It arrived today in pieces! Instead of packing it carefully as I had advised, it had been wrapped with a thin layer of bubble wrap and placed on the wrought iron base in the box. Another expensive chandalier, that I had similarly identified as fragile, was packed with a garden sprayer on top of it. We also had several valuable paintings that we were told would have crates constructed specifically for them. Instead, a $7000 oil painting and a $4000 painting were packed back-to-back in a cardboard box - no wrapping at all! When I called to complain, the manager, Jackie Cavanaugh, repeatedly asked if the boxes were damaged. I kept answering that the there was no damage to the boxes. The damage was on the interior packing that was performed by her packers. I pointed out that we paid for professionals not buffoons. (Yes, I did refer to her helpers as buffoons.) You'd think this level of shoddy work - not to mention the damage to our valuable chandelier - would warrant an apology at the very least. Not so! She, Jackie Cavanaugh, hung up on me. This is a poor excuse for customer focus and "management".
This company is bad news. The workers can't follow simple instructions given to them more than once. Moving is stressful enough without this kind of frustration.
If any moving companies happen to read this, you'd be advised to make note of the manager's name - JACKIE CAVANAUGH. She's not someone you'd want on your payroll in any capacity let alone manager.
On the first day, a crew showed up, professionally dressed and on time. The crew chief explained that the schedule had been changed; they would need to pack the house in one day. We were not ready for this, nor did we have any recourse. I literally was given 10 minutes to pack whatever I needed for the next 5 days! We tried to renegotiate the timing, but soon realized that was useless, so we did our best to go with the flow. The packers were fast, and the tempo picked up in the afternoon. So much so, that some of the boxes didn't get labelled accurately or at all, some cartons were missed in the inventory, and not everything got packed. My husband and I were exhausted by 5p and the crew finally departed about 8p.
The next day, the loading crew arrived, professionally dressed and on time. I had hired my own crew to help make sure that EVERYTHING got packed, even outdoor hoses, lights, and other things that were overlooked the day before. The moving crew finished all the packing, loading, and finally left the property at 6p. After a second exhausting day, I hit the road for Las Vegas, arriving the next afternoon.
The driver, Hugo, was great -- he stayed in touch by cell phone, and on Friday morning arrived with our delivery and a local load-in crew. The load-in went very smoothly, with me checking off items as they were unloaded, and finding over a dozen cartons unlabelled with inventory tags. Twenty or more cartons were not labelled with the rooms they belonged in, so we placed those centrally. That day, we found only one item had been badly broken, and it fell within our insurance deductible.
When the crew departed in the late afternoon, I had only enough energy left to make my bed and fall into it. It took me ten full days to recover from the exhausting pace of packing, loading, driving, and taking delivery. Given that we paid for packing services, we never expected to have to work that hard, and if I ever have to do it again, I will do my own packing, because it's easier to do it a room at a time than to have to oversee four rooms being packed out at the same time.
The packing materials used were also excessive. It was appropriate for glassware, antiques, and other fragile items, but we found they had used (for one example) 2 or 3 sheets of paper to wrap around an ordinary clearn kitchen towel, or a half-used roll of TP -- that's poor judgment. Despite those excesses, we have found only one broken tea-pot, which also falls within our deductible.
The more annoying aspect is that because of the rushed pack-out, many boxes were unlabelled with the contents, or mis-labelled, so it has taken almost two months to get through every carton and we are still missing things. (We have a few more unopened cartons to unpack.) Due to our fatigue and the speed of the load-in, we also did not get the furniture placed properly against walls, and that has slowed down our unpacking because we need to get the furniture placed (bookshelf units, china cabinet, etc.) before we can put things away.
If you're completely organized and energetic enough to keep up with a crew of four for three days of packing, loading and delivery, and you want everything to get to its destination in one piece, I recommend you use Wheaton/Move-Pros. We were so thrown by the change in pack-out schedule, and being older, unable to function fully in such a rigorous process. When I complained to the company in writing afterward, my complaint was escalated from the scheduler to the manager and right to Wheaton's customer service director, who apologized in writing and refunded $200 for our trouble. To me that shows that Wheaton/Move-Pros is a stand-up company, it really does value its customers satisfaction, and we would not hesitate to use or recommend them in the future.
A couple of further comments: I partially hired Move-Pros because they have a good reputation for moving pianos and other musical instruments. They moved my heavy, tall upright piano with nary a scratch on the piano or the bench, so I was extremely happy with that.
Also, Move-Pros bid against 3 other companies. Theirs was the lowest bid, with the highest amount of weight. I checked out all the companies through BBB, the DOT and Move-Pros had a very good record and high BBB rating. Two other companies proved to be "fly-by-nights" under this scrutiny, one other made my decision difficult because their bid and track record were very similar, but in the end I chose Move-Pros because it's part of Wheaton's national company and I felt secure that once I signed with them I wouldn't have any problems, such as missing items or "can't hear you" claims processing. And indeed, aside from the scheduling issue, we were very happy with the speed, quality of service, and price, and I was most impressed that my concerns were not dismissed but actually handled with respect and quickly.
