While the sales rep was still at our home I went in the other room and looked up the company on Yelp and Angie's List. I noticed the negative reviews, but it seemed that the negative feedback was from people who hadn't had work done and were just annoyed by their pushy sales and marketing tactics. I was honest with the rep about what I'd seen and he assured us that the folks who have work done are very happy (which the reviews seemed to indicate is accurate).
The sales guy was at our house for three hours going through all the various options, taking measurements, etc. In the end, he offered us a price that seemed very fair (but it took a long time to get there), and we signed a contract to have the work done. I will say that the original price he quoted us was literally DOUBLE the price we settled on, which is a bit of a red flag in terms of a company's integrity. What if someone didn't haggle, as we did? That person would be seriously overcharged and it wouldn't be right for a company to take advantage of a customer in that way. So that was a little sleazy, but I overlooked it.
The work was set to begin by the end of that week. Because we had landscapers doing some work that became unexpectedly delayed I called the phone number for the company on the Elite business card the sales rep gave us to ask if we could delay their start date by two weeks. The lady I spoke with agreed. Apparently, this was not communicated to the sales rep, who contacted me several days later to ask what was going on. I told him about the discussion I had with the person at Elite and he said I should have just communicated directly with him via his personal email address. More weirdness.
As the date I arranged with the woman at Elite got closer I emailed the sales rep to confirm that we were still and quot;onand quot; and to request a specific crew that the salesman had raved about. He wrote back and said he would see what he could do and that he wanted to set up a time to discuss financing so we could and quot;set up a time for install.and quot; I wrote back, indicating that I thought we were already confirmed for the upcoming date based on my call to the company HQ and that we were leaning toward paying cash, rather than doing financing.
And that was it. Nobody showed up to do the install on the scheduled day, and the sales guy never got back to me. It's been more than a month. I never felt completely settled about these guys from the get-go, but was willing to give them a shot. They blew it. I would definitely suggest avoiding Elite Home Energy. It appears that something shady is going on.
I was interested in exterior improvements, paint or texture coating of some kind that would retain the breathable qualities of my stucco exterior. He made a call and set me up with an appointment for a quote. It was not until this time that I determined he did not represent the agency but rather Elite Home Energy. This raised my radar...
At the appointment time, the Elite Home energy guy made measurements and gave me a quote (over $15,000 for the SealCoat process they wanted to use.) Then I asked what it would cost for a re-stucco to re-coat my existing surface. He gave me a quote which was even higher... saying all the existing stucco would have to be removed and replaced with a new surface.
I let him know that I'd have to save up to get that kind of work done (either the SafeCoat or the Stucco.) At this time he filled me in on the and quot;deal.and quot; The work would be financed and the bill would be paid with my annual tax bill (that's where the government gets involved.) I was greatly disappointed in that plan as it is not at all a smart way to pay for home repairs or improvements.
Neither of the quotes was provided to me in writing, nor did the representative leave me anything but a business card.
He was a good kid, but I don't think this was very professionally done. I believe a trusted company would give me a written quote, especially if it was something they were willing to honor for up to a year. I felt they were deceptive in getting me to my door for the first encounter implying they represented an agency meant to inform me of some ownership rights toward possible grants.
Elite appears to do good work as I have read over other reports of them on Angie. But GOOD businesses don't have to resort to these practices to solicit business. They never lied to me, but you don't have to lie to be deceptive. I probably wouldn't use them for that reason alone. Not sure I could trust them.
Less than a week later, the work crew came to my home. A husband and wife management team handled everything, and made sure it was all done right. Three workers did the actual 5 days of labor, which was extensive, and it was fairly hot outside. They arrived on time each day, cleaned up after themselves each day, and were able to give me answers to whatever I ask. The work looks great. We are very happy with it. I was happy with the customer service. When I ask to fix something, it was fixed by the next day.
We financed our work with Enerbank, 0% if paid in full on time, which we did. This was our first time hiring workers to touch our home. We would work with the people at ELITE again if needed in the future. I'd trust them to do it right.
