Moon Valley Nursery

I needed to replace a failing tree on my front lawn. Given the location I wanted a good size tree to provide screening between my house and my gate. I talked to my landscape architect who told me the nursery he usually deals with would not deal directly with me. We would both need to go to the nursery, select a tree and then arrange for a landscaper to plant it. He also mentioned that he had heard good things about Moon Valley but had not used them. He said they would deal directly with me and be responsible for the planting. This seemed like a siplier solution so I went to Fillmore and found a place with a great selection of trees. I met with Emilio Gomez, the Manager and told him what I was looking for. The first tree he took me to I knew it was the one. He showed me several more but I had found my tree. Within two weeks is was in place on my front lawn. The crew who put it in did a great job. They had to deal with a large root. When they were finished the tree was well staged and there was no evidence that they had been there. Highly recommend.

My experience with them was great.  They came in over a couple of days and installed everything and cleaned up everything.  It worked out fine.  I found them through advertisement in the newspaper.

The purchase part of it was unfortunately like dealing with a car salesman. When you initially go down to buy your plants, it's a negotiation from the get go. There is a warranty on plants as long as they plant them. But they charge to plant them. We did have some plants die and they did warrant them but not without a little bit of grief.

About a year ago we lost two important decorative trees in our front yard to disease.  I'd been on the lookout for a source and Moon Valley Nursery recently opened a location in our area and they specialize in large 'specimen' size trees.

I got good advice about which types of trees to select.  There are even larger trees than the ones we selected but 36" box trees are already huge and fit the existing planting areas.

The trees were delivered and planted by their team they day after purchase.  This is no small feat.  It required 6 men about 1/.2 day to complete since they first had to dig out a cubic yard of soil by hand and relocate some existing lawn irrigation lines.

I was particularly impressed with the crew.  Despite the amount of digging they left the yard in very good order.

The trees are about 50% of full size and are immediately able to provide shade and interest to the front of the house.  I strongly recommend these 'specimen' size trees for anyone considering a similar project.  If you bought those skinny 6 footers that you often see in local nurseries you'd be waiting 5 to 7 years for them to get just this big.
